Dance
Fine ensemble

The students of Sri Sathyanarayana Raju will be presenting a dance ensemble titled, Chaturagamini on August 31, 7 pm at ADA Rangamandira, J C Road.

Bharatanatyam

The Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) is presenting a bharatanatyam duet recital by Pushya Pradeep and Sindhu Pradeep on August 31, 6.30 pm at Yavanika, State Youth Centre, Nrupathunga Road. This performance is a part of the ‘Every Friday Cultural Evening Programme’.  

In memory

A bharatanatyam recital in the Maargam format will be presented in memory of S Rajaram, grandson of Mysore Vasudevachar, by guru Vasanta Vedam, assisted by Nrityakala Parishad and Vishruta School of Dance. All items will be compositions of M Vasudevachar and S Rajaram. Dancers from Kalakshetra and Vishruta will participate in it. This programme will be held at Seva Sadan, Malleswaram on September 2, 6.30 pm.

Endowment series

The Indian Institute of World Culture is presenting a series of endowment programmes till the end of September. The series will start with a lecture-cum-demonstration on the topic, ‘Dance: A Universal and Unique Human Expression’ by Mythili Anoop, special guest faculty, St Joseph’s Post Graduate and Research Centre, on September 1, 6 pm. A bharatanatyam recital by Kruthika Thyagarajan, a disciple of Shakuntala R Prabhat, will be held on September 4, 6 pm. This is being conducted on the occasion of ‘Smt Leela R Sastry Memorial Endowment Programme’. Both programmes will be held at No 6, Sri B P Wadia Road, Basavanagudi. For details, call 26678581.

Varied patterns

Vermilion House is showcasing an exclusive exhibition of traditional and classic Kancheepuram sarees by Lakshmi Creations, a weaver who is reviving old patterns in pure zari and traditional colours on August 31 and September 1, from 10.30 am to 7 pm. ‘Science congress

In connection with the ‘20th National Children’s Science Congress-2012’, Suchitra Balajagath, in association with Karnataka Rajya Vijnana Parishat, is holding a workshop for teachers of high school and middle school. ‘Vastrabhushana’

Sampoorn is organising, Vastrabhushana, an exhibition, from August 31 to September 5, 10 am to 7.30 pm at Karnataka Chitrakala Parishat. The products that will be on display include saris, kurtis and accessories. The artisans will also display silver jewellery and filigiri ethnic ornaments.

Live performance

CounterCulture is presenting T L Mazumdar and Jivraj Singh live in concert on August 31, 8 pm onwards. The venue is CounterCulture, 2D2, 4th Cross, Dyavasandra Industrial Area, Near Xylem building, Whitefield Road.

‘Smarane’

Ustad Balekhan Memorial Trust is presenting ‘Smarane’ – ‘Remembering Sitar Nawaz Ustad Bale Khan’, on September 1, 5.30 pm at JSS Auditorium, Jayanagar. On the occasion, there will be a Hindustani vocal recital by Pandit Shrinivas Joshi. He will be accompanied by Prashant Pandav on tabla and Vyasamurthy Katti on harmonium.

There will also be a mohan veena recital by Pandit Vishwamohan Bhatt. He will be accompanied by Pandit Raamkumar Mishra on tabla. 

For peace

‘India in Concert’, in association with a recording studio and a record label is presenting, ‘Music for Peace’, which will feature performances by Zubeen Garg, ‘Aurko’ and singers Siddaraju and Sangeetha Srikishen on September 1 and 2. Saxophone feast

Bangalore International Centre is presenting a classical Carnatic music recital on saxophone by G Ramanathan September 7, 6.30 pm. Annamayya sankeerthanas National seminar

Annamayya sankeerthanas National seminar, Bangalore,26-08-12.

Telugu Vignana Samithi, Bangalore in collaboration with Annamacharya Project of TTD, Tirupati are conducting a day long National Seminar – Annamayya Sankeerthana Samalochana on 26th August 2012 from 12 noon onwards at Telugu Vignana Samithi building (backside of Chowdiah memorial hall), No. 29, G.D. Park extension, Vyalikaval, Bangalore.

Altogether 14 papers pertaining to various aspects of Annamayya compositions will be presented by scholars from around the country. This will be followed by a music concert by the artists of Annamacharya project from 6.15 pm to 8.15 pm.

Bengaluru International Arts Festival 2012 (BIAF 2012)


BIAF an initiative by AIM…Artists’ Introspective Movement (AIM) is initiated by internationally known Veena exponent Dr.Suma Sudhindra and renowned Kuchipudi exponent Veena Murthy Vijay.

The BIAF will bring in a global perspective and in the process create a platform and opportunity for the Local artists and the Guest artists to interact and perform in an international context.The goal is to provide a unique and unprecedented environment to regenerate and build bridges between the society & artists through public-private partnership

BIAF 2008,2009,2010,2011 were grand sucess. Inspired from this, This Year BIAF will be spread over 3 weekends from 31st Aug, 16th September.

Oota from Your Thota Mela



On World Kitchen Garden Day, Bangalore Mirror Earth Warriors joins hands with Garden City Farmers Trust in conducting ‘Oota from your Thota’ (Food from your garden) mela that will bring together all terrace gardeners under one roof. An exhibition of garden equipment, seeds, compost, vegetables, food counters and more would also be held to help budding terrace gardeners.



Oota from your Thota  is an Organic Mela to spread the awareness on Urban farming/gardening. In addition, you can also find Organic products/produce. There will also be an area dedicated to OTG members for discussion & exchange of Ideas and also to showcase/display the plants that they've grown to inspire the budding gardeners.

Dr Narayana Reddy - Organic Farmer from Doddaballapur will be one of the Guest Speaker.

‘Cottage Mela’

A ‘Cottage Mela’ is being organised by the Central Cottage Industries Emporium (CCIE) till August 26 at Safina Plaza, Infantry road. The ‘Mela’ provides an opportunity to behold the rich and varied art and craft traditions of India’s culturally enriched regions.

Jewellery, art objects, paintings, metal ware, woodcraft, furniture, lamps, pottery, women’s and men’s wear, saris, shawls, accessories, dress fabrics, marble craft, herbal products are on display.

Craft show

The Tamil Nadu Handicrafts Development Corporation Limited, popularly known as Poompuhar, is holding a crafts’ mela to help artisans market their products.
One can find a variety of handicrafts to choose from — oil lamps, incense and perfumery, Kancheepuram silk saris, carpets and wood carvings among others.
The exhibition will be held at the Poompuhar sales showroom at 104, Brigade Road till August 27, from 11am to 9 pm.


Diverse recitals

Sri Padmavathi Kala Nikethan Institute of Fine Arts of Mathikere Layout is celebrating Bharath Nrithya Darshan 2012 with bharatanatyam, kuchipudi, odissi and kathak recitals on August 23, 6 pm at Seva Sadan, opposite MLA College, 14th Cross, Malleswaram.

The performances include bharatanatyam by the Rasika troupe, odissi by Madhilita Mohapatra and troupe, kuchupudi by Padmapriya Praveen and Manjula Palla and kathak by artistes of Kalpana School of Dance. Entry is free. For details, call 41285017.

A Hindustani vocal recital by Priya Purushothaman will be held on August 24, 6.30 pm at Bangalore International Centre, Teri Complex, 4th Main, 2nd Cross, Domlur II Stage.

In memory

Karaikudi Brothers Traditional Veena Institute and Ananya are presenting a veena concert by Kalaimamani S Srinivasan, (a disciple of Rajeswari Padmanabhan), accompanied by Ganakalashri C Cheluvaraju (mridangam) on August 25, 6 pm at Ananya Sabhangana, 91/2, 4th Main, Malleswaram. This is being held in memory of Vainika Vidushi Kalaimamani Rajeswari Padmanabhan. It is a mikeless concert and the veena used is designed by Rajeswari Padmanabhan.

Vocal notes

As part of Sapthaswara Academy’s 99th grand monthly chamber music programme, there will be a vocal concert by Sadasivam on August 26, 6.45 pm at the residence of Dr K Gopalan, 4/2, Malleswara Mansion, 6th Main, Malleswaram. He will be accompanied on violin by Yashasvi, on mridangam by Cheluvaraju and on ghatam by Gurmurthy N.

Young voices

Poornima Satish and Pavithra Ramesh, students of Carnatic musician Bombay Jayashri, will be presenting individual vocal performances on August 26, 5 pm at the Indian Heritage Academy Hall, 6th Block, near Police Station, Koramangala.

Music Circle is presenting a vocal recital by Ashwath Narayanan on August 26, 6.15 pm at No. 12, Basaveshwara House Building Co-operative Society Ltd, 7th Cross, 2nd Main, Chandra Layout. H M Smitha will be on violin and B R Srinivas on mridangam.

As part of Ananya Nrithyollasa-3, bharatanatyam by Prakruthi L S, mohiniyattam by Rekha Raju and odissi by Vandana Supriya will be held on August 26, 6 pm. The venue is Seva Sadan, 14th Cross, Malleswaram.


  
Science congress

World Kitchen Day event: Chennai

Here is some great news for all those of you who have been talking to about composting your kitchen waste and growing your own edible plants. reStore is launching its new urban gardening initiative reStore gardens on World Kitchen Garden Day, August 26th (Sunday) at SPACES, 1, Elliots Beach Road, Besant Nagar. The event is being held from 9 am to 4 pm.

There are speakers sharing their knowledge with us, demonstrations and displays to watch and learn from, and seeds and books to buy. The detailed programme for the day is given on the website.

There is a suggested donation of Rs. 200 to help them cover the organising costs. It can be made at the registration desk on the day of the event.

There will be organic refreshments in the morning break. Because of the restrictions enforced at the venue, no lunch is being served to the participants. During the lunch break (between 1.15 and 2.30 pm), you are requested to eat outside and return to the venue for the practical sessions in the afternoon. We deeply regret the inconvenience caused to you!

 
If you’ve never gardened before, come with a 2-5 litre container and ready to get your hand dirty! Plant your own edible sapling and take it home with you! Your container could be a polythene cover, a paint bucket from a local shop (cleaned of all the paint sticking inside it), a pot, or any old container in your house that is either polythene plastic, terracota, or cloth.
