ART

Urban women


Magnitude Gallery is presenting an exhibition titled, Vanitaa at the gallery, No 140/13, 27th Cross, 13th Main, 3rd Block, Jayanagar till May 31. There will be some original masterpieces that depict the state of the majority of Indian women. The exhibition also covers some aspects of the highly accomplished urban women who are walking shoulder-to-shoulder with men.

Oleographs

An exhibition of Raja Ravi Varma’s 100-year-old original oleographs will be on display at No 528/B, 12th Cross Road, RMV Extension from June 3 to 17, 11 am to 6 pm. 

Vibrant shades

Renaissance Gallerie is presenting a group show till May 31 at No 104, Westminster, 13, Cunningham Road. The show will feature paintings by artists such as Harsha K R, Prakash C R, Priyadarshiini, C M  Shetty, Rashmi Tandon and V
Solanki.

Workshop

Banna Creations is hosting a ‘PHAD painting workshop’ on June 1 and 2, 1 pm to 6 pm, at the YWCA in Koramangala. PHAD is a traditional form of painting from the Bhilwara region of Rajathan. These paintings are pictorial representations of stories from the Hindu epics and puran.

Beautiful world

An exhibition on Indian printmaking, titled ‘Between the Lines: Identity, Place and Power’ is being held at the NGMA auditorium till June 7. The pieces of art have been selected from the ‘Waswo Collection’ of Indian printmaking. This is curated by Lina Vincent Sunish. There will also be several parallel outreach programmes such as talks, curators’ walk, film screening, gallery walk and workshops on print techniques.

Solo show

Sublime Art Gallery is presenting ‘Soulink- Celebrating Life’, a solo art exhibition by Swati Pasari, from June 14 to 29, 11 am to 6 pm, at Sublime Art Gallery, UB City. On display will be 26 artworks and five sculptures.

‘Sunday Jam’

Freedom Jam is organising the ‘Sunday Jam’ on June 2, 4 pm at Jaaga on Double Road. This is a platform for musicians and bands from all genres who are interested in performing live. It is a forum for non-commercial, independent music. For details, log on to www.freedomjam.in.        

Carnatic strains

Bflat is presenting a concert by ‘Karthick Iyer Live’ on May 31, 8.30 pm. Karthick will be accompanied by Vikram Vivekanand on the lead guitar, Napier Naveen Kumar on the bass guitar, Allwyn Jeya Paul on the multi-percussion and Sumesh Narayan on the mridangam. ‘Karthick Iyer Live’ is a collaboration of musicians from different musical cultu­res. The band’s music is a heady brew of Indian classical vocals, the electric violin, edgy rock guitar grooves, Afro Cu­ban rhythms, and mridangam. The band composes in both Tamil and English and also explores contemporary adaptations of Carnatic keertanas.

‘Project Yuj’

CounterCulture is hosting ‘Project Yuj’, a neo-Carnatic fusion band on May 31, 9 pm at No 2D2, 4th Cross, Dyavasandra Industrial Area, Whitefield Road. The group members’ diverse musical backgrounds and formidable chops allow for flights of improvisational freedom and virtuosity while still maintaining accessibility and musicality.

Fusion fiesta

CounterCulture is hosting, MoonArra and Friends, a world fusion band on June 1, 9 pm at No 2D2, 4th Cross, Dyavasandra Industrial Area, Whitefield Road. The concert will showcase MoonArra’s compositions and other songs and influences. 

It will feature musicians Jagadeesh M R on nylon and electric guitars, Prakash Sontakke on vocals and Hawaaian slide guitars, Madhuri Jagadeesh on vocals and creative narration, Karthik Mani on the drums, percussion and konnakol, K N Prakash on the electric bass, Mike Sorensen on the didgeridoo and blues harp, Chaitra Sontakke on Hindustani vocal and Ganesh Viswanathan on Carnatic vocal.

Beat it

‘Beat Gurus’, a hand percussion band, will perform on May 31, 6 pm at The Courtyard, Phoenix Marketcity, Mahadevapura, Whitefield Road. The group is involved in playing African and Arabian instruments like djembe and darbooka. The group also plays fusion of Indian and Afric­an rhythms, including Au­stralian digiridoo. Entry is free.

Concert series

‘Blues Around Town’, a series of blues concerts will be held from June 1 till June 8. The series of concerts will be held across different venues in the City. There will also be busking sessions in places like Church Street, Indiranagar, Domlur, Koramangala and JP Nagar. The aim of the busking sessions is to spread the culture of performances in public sessions.

The grand finale will be held on June 8 at CounterCulture and will feature a performance by international artiste Monica Hedgal from Norway. The evening also features ‘Overdrive Trio’ from Mumbai, ‘Warren Mendosa’ from Mumbai, ‘Hoodoo Gas’ and ‘Chronic Blues Circus’.

For a cause


Garage Jam is featuring concerts by music bands ‘Nihilus’ and ‘Thrash’ on May 31, 6 pm at Sonido Musicals, opposite Catholic Club, Brigade Road. The concert hopes to raise some awareness on anti-smoking and prohibition against the use of tobacco.

DANCE

Anniversary

Vishrutha School of Performing Arts is celebrating its 36th anniversary on June 1, 6 pm at the ADA Rangamandira. The evening will feature a variety of dances from classical to contemporary and folk.

Duet treat


The Indian Council for Cultural Relations is presenting a bharatanatyam duet dance by Manjula L and Meghna Venkat on May 31, 6.30 pm at Yavan­ika, Nrupathunga Road. This is a part of ‘Every Friday Cultural Evening Programme’.

Many moves
Ashish Khokar’s ‘Dance DISCourse Series’ will have ‘Contemporary Explorations’ on June 1, 6.30 pm at Alliance Francaise. It will feature performances by Mayuri and Madhuri Upadhya’s Nritarutya and Tushar and Pooja Bhatt. The evening will begin with a short film on history of choreography in India, with snippets from various works down the ages. Choreographers Mayuri-Madhuri Upadhya’s Nritarutya will present new works from forms such as yoga, chhau, kathak, taichi and Bollywood.

The two traditionally trained dancers — Tushar and Pooja Bhatt — will use kathak for contemporary explorations.

‘Kalaarnava’


Gokulam is presenting Kalaarnava 2013 on June 2, 9 am onwards at JSS auditorium, Jayanagar 8th Block. Vidyaarnava award will be conferred on B Jayashree, a singer and theatre veteran and Kalaavatamsa will be awarded to Surmani Pravin Godkhindi, a  Hindustani flautist, and K Kalyan, a lyricist-poet on the occasion.

The event will also feature a few cultural programmes such as Vachana and Dasarapada.

The evening will have performances by Ambayya Nuli, Mandya Ramesh, Pravin Godkhindi, Nirupama-Rajendra and the choir team Antardhwani.

POT POURRI

Comic treat

The first annual ‘Bangalore Comics Convention’ will be held at Koramangala stadium, National Games Village on June 1 and  2. The highlight of the festival will be ‘Cosplay’, a costume contest which includes five categories such as comic book/graphic novel’, ‘animated series’, ‘manga’, ‘sci-fi/fantasy’ and ‘gaming.’ Ten new book titles will be launched on the occasion.

The convention will also have participants from different countries such as UK, UAE and United States of America.

Math magic

Goethe-Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan is presenting an exhibition titled ‘Hands On Maths’ curated by the Mathemati­kum, Germany, the first interactive mathematics museum in the world, from June 1 to 15, 10 am to 5 pm, at Go­ethe-Institut/ Max Mueller Bhav­an, Indiranagar. It is being presented in collaboration with the Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum, Bangalore. The exhibition depicts abstr­act concepts in a comprehensible manner, banking on a playful approach to mathematics — for all age groups. You can explore the 20 ingenious exhibits in this travelling exhibition from the Mathema­tikum.

‘Hands On Maths’ displays a selection of particularly popular and established experiments from the exhibition in Giessen.

Delightful stories

Rafiki is presenting, ‘The Fabulous Adventures of Aditi and Friends’ on June 1, 3 pm and 6.30 pm and on June 2 at 3 pm and 6.30 pm. The venue for both days is Jagriti Theatre, Whitefield. This children’s play is based on the delightful series of stories written by Suniti Namjoshi and published by Tulika. The play features a fun mix of puppets, song and dance to narrate the adventures of an unusual group of friends. The duration of the bilingual (English and Kannada) performance is 40 minutes. Gujarati play


Jain Social Group is presenting a play in Gujarati on June 2, 5.45 pm at Chowdaiah Memorial Hall. The play features well-known theatre artistes from Mumbai such as T V Muvi, Mukesh Raval and actor-director Jayesh Barbhaya.

Bangalore Comic Con 2013, to be held over the weekend of June 1-2, 2013 between 11 am to 7 pm at Koramangala Stadium, National Games Village, will mark the beginning of an annual Comics Convention for Bangalore.

Comic Con India is planning an array of activities for Bangalore Comic Con 2013 (BCC). They range from participation from International artists & publishers, workshops & interactive sessions every hour at the dedicated stage area to exclusive launches of Comics titles, more book signings, display and sale of a wide range of comics & merchandise, special corners for creating comics and cartoons, Contests, and lots more.

Dance

Varied steps

Shristi is organising ‘World Dance Week’ in the City. As part of the programme, there will be a host of events and artistes performing.

On May 2, 6 pm, there will be the launch of Shristi Sangeet by Shimoga Subbanna at Ravindra Kalakshetra.

 On May 3, 8 pm, there will be a contemporary kathak performance by Anurekha Gosh at Nayana Auditorium.

There will be a kathak performance by Sadananda Biswas and an odissi performance by Anita on May 4, 3.50 pm onwards at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. Kalai Koodam will perform a bharathanatyam recital on May 5, 7.15 pm at Seva Sadan.

The grand finale will be held on May 6. Shristi will be conferring the ‘Shristi National Achive Award’ for dance to Sudha Chandran.

This will be followed by her performance at 5.30 pm at Chowdaiah Memorial Hall.

Fond memories

Crimson is hosting a group exhibition titled ‘Embedded Memories’ till May 15.

The exhibition is a montage of relatively light-hearted vignettes from the lives of four different artists, with the majority of paintings drawn from fond memories.

The exhibition will feature works by Sujata Achrekar, Sukanta Das, Nagesh Goud and Shravan Kumar.

‘Waswo Collection’

National Gallery of Modern Art is presenting an exhibition on Indian printmaking, titled ‘Between the Lines: Identity, Place and Power’ at the NGMA auditorium till May 28. The pieces of art have been selected from the ‘Waswo Collection’ of Indian printmaking. This is curated by Lina Vincent Sunish.

There will also be several parallel outreach programmes such as talks, curators walk, film screening, gallery walk and workshops on print techniques.

‘50 Under 50’ 


Kynkyny Art presents ‘50 Under 50’, a group show featuring 50 works of art by an array of artists till May 24, 10 am to 7 pm at No 104 Embassy Square, 148 Infantry Road.

The show features upcoming and critically-acclaimed artists like Dhrubajyoti Baral, Ganapati Hegde, Jasu Rawal, Praveen Kumar, Sivabalan, Sachin Jaltre, JMS Mani, Subramaniam, just to mention a few.

‘Piya Behroopiya’

Bhoomija presents Atul Kumar’s Piya Behroopiya,  a Hindi musical comedy, on May 3 and May 4.

Contemporary acts

Attakkalari Centre for Movement Arts is organising an Attakkalari summer camp from April 29 to May 11. The age group is juniors (five to eight years), seniors (nine  to 12 years) and teens (13 to19 years).
