MUSIC
All that jazz
Windmills Craftworks, Bangalore’s first jazz theatre and microbrewery, is presenting an exclusive performance by progressive jazz-fusion band, ‘Dhruv & Co’, on February 22 and 23, 8 pm at Windmills Craftworks, 331 Road, 5B EPIP Zone, Whitefield. Dhruv will be on guitar, F A Ramiandrisoa on keyboard and saxophone, Sheldon D’Silva on bass, Gino Banks on drums and guest performer Yuichiro Tokuda on saxophone. For details, call 25692012.

‘Ragavalli 2’

Ananya is holding Ragavalli 2, introducing new compositions for music and dance, on February 24, 10 am at Ananya Sabhangana, 4th Main, Malleswaram. On the occasion, Sataavadhaani R Ganesh and Rajani Nagaraj Vasuki will present a music recital. They will be accompanied by Adamya (mridangam) and Venkatesh Joshier (violin). The venue is Ananya Sabhangana, 4th Main, Malleswaram.

Soothing touch
The ‘Vienna University Choir’ will present a concert at St Andrew’s Church, 27, Cubbon Road on February 23, 7 pm. The choir consists of 82 singers and 15 musicians. Vijaya Upadhyaya is the artistic director of the ‘Vienna University Orchestra and Choir’.

‘Yours Forever’
The Lions Club of Sundarnagar is organising a music show of retro Bollywood hits, ‘Yours Forever’, on February 24, 5 pm at Sophia’s High School Auditorium. Hits of Mohammed Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Mukesh, Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhonsle will be rendered on the occasion. The singers are Anil Bajpai, Vinod Seshadri, Mukhtar Shah, Neelima Gokhale and Samapada Goswami. The proceeds of the show are meant for a home for special children. ‘Qawwali’ moments
India Foundation for the Arts is presenting ‘An evening of qawwali with the Warsi Brothers’ at Chowdaiah Hall on March 8, 7.30 pm. The brothers — Nazeer Ahmed Khan Warsi and Naseer Ahmed Khan Warsi — belong to the Delhi gharana of Hindustani music. Donor passes are available on www.indianstage.in and www.bookmyshow.com. ‘Nadajyothi’

The ‘48th Nadajyothi Music Festival 2013’ will be held till February 24 at R P Ravishankar Sabhangana, Sri Kanyakaparameshwari Temple premises, 8th Cross, Vasavi Temple Road, Malleswaram. The festival will have artistes like Gayathri Girish Chennai, A Kanyakumari, T S Pattabhiram Pandit, M S Sheela, Vinayak M Thoravi, HK Narasimhamurthy and D Shashikala performing. ART

‘Dawn Upon...’

National Gallery of Modern Art is holding an exhibition titled ‘Dawn Upon Delhi: Rise of a Capital’ till March 16 at the NGMA Gall­ery, Palace Road. There will also be a panel discussion on ‘Visualising Bangalore Photo­graphy and the City' on February 24, from 5 pm to 7 pm.

Varied vision
Tasveer is presenting ‘Magnum’s Vision Of India — The Last 50 Years’ till March 1, 10 am to 6 pm. The venue is Cinnamon, 1st Floor,11 Walton Road, off Lavelle Road.

Group show
A group show will be held till February 22 at Renaissance Gallerie. Paintings by Karuna Bhat, Manjusha Athani and Neha Agarwal will be on display.

Water colour

A two-week exhibition of water colour art by Kudalayya Hiremath will be held till February 28, 10 am to 7 pm at Nivriti – The Art Quarter, 72, Vishweshwaraya Layout, near Sir MVIT Engineering College, Nellakunte, Bettahalasur.

Great strokes

A group show will be held from February 23 to 28 at Renaissance Gallerie. Paintings by Elbin Paul S, Maxine Silva,Shridhar Upadhye, Sudipta Kundu will be on display at the show.

‘Skin of ...’

‘Skin of the Earth’, an exhibition of recent works by Babu Eshwar Prasad, will be on display at Gallery Sumukha, Wilson Garden till March 13.

Working across media with painting, digital prints and videos, the exhibition engages with the idea of soil.

DRAMA

Play on
TEA Arts is presenting ‘Bangalore Theatre League’ on March 3, 3 pm at Alliance Francaise. The event will see performances by  theatre troupes from BMS College of Engineering, Mount Carmel College, Amrita Institute of Technology and the Indian Institute of Management followed by a professional performance by the TEA arts team (MSRIT students).

The event will have three phases: Phase 1 will see Mount Carmel staging ‘Rumors’ ( Neil Simon) at 3 pm. The production is by MCC’s drama team ‘Tye & Die’. BMS College of Engineering will then stage the play Rakshasa, which is produced by Pravruthhi, the BMSCE theatre team. Phase two will begin at 5 pm with Amrita Institute of Technology’s play ‘Untitled’. The production is by ASE-B. This will be followed by the Indian Institute of Management’s play ‘Party’, produced by ‘IIMB Dramatics’. Phase 3 will see TEA Arts presenting Gun-Jha at 3.45 pm.

On the streets
Avishkara Pragathi Sanskruthi Vedike is holding a Kannada street play festival from February 22 to 24. Plays like Samskruthi Marevanige, Parivarthane, Chitra and many others will be staged at the Malleswaram Grounds. For details, call 23561257.

‘Somewhat Like...’

As part of the ‘Curtain Raisers’ event at Jagriti, Whitefield, Just Theatre will stage ‘Somewhat Like a Balloon’, a devised performance, on February 22, 23 (8 pm) and February 24 (3 pm and 6.30 pm). ‘Somewhat Like a Balloon’ is written and directed by Vinod Ravindran. 

It is devised and performed by Anshul Pathak, Anjali Nair, Rency Philip and Swetanshu Bora.

The other plays are Workshop Productions’ ‘Yashodhare Awakens’ (March 1 to 3); AllMyTea’s (Mumbai) ‘Cock by Mike Bartlett’ (March 8 to10); Flinntheater’s ‘C Sharp C Blunt’, a devised performance (March 15 to 17); Q Theatre Productions’ (Mumbai) ‘So Many Socks’ by Annie Zaidi (March 22 to 24); and Tortilla’s’ ‘Seussification of A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ by Peter Bloedel (March 29 to 31). DANCE
‘Gudiya Sambhrama’
Gudiya Sambhrama, the temple festival organised by ‘Heritage’, will be held every weekend till March 3 at the ancient temples in the City. The theme this year is ‘Sacred Animals’ and ‘Divine Vahanas’. Nadamrutha group (Carnatic vocal), Madhulita Mohapatra and Anjali Raj Urs (odissi dance duet) will perform on February 23 while Vasudha Balakrishna (Carnatic vocal) and Surya Rao (kuchipudi) will perform on February 24. The venue for the events is Sri Chokka­nathaswamy Devasthana, Domlur. H G Chaitra (Hindustani vocal) and Punya group (bharatanatyam) will present recitals on March 1 at Karanji Anjaneya Devasthanam, Basavanagudi. Anupama Hos­kere’s puppetry show will be on March 2; Sikkil Gurucharan’s Carnatic vocal recital and Rukmini Vijayakumar’s bharatanatyam will be held on March 3. ‘Platform One’
‘Platform One’, an initiative from The Lewis Foundation of Classical Ballet, is showcasing five choreographic works on February 22, 5.30 pm at the National Gallery of Modern Art, Palace Road. The choreographers are Abhilash Ningappa, Anirvan Singh, Rukmini Vijaykumar, Renukumar Siddanand, Safia Suboohi, Tamsin Magnay and Veena Basavarajaiah.

Kathak lessons

Nrityanidhi Dance Institute is presenting a Prayaas, a presentation by budding kathak dancers, on February 22 at Anandashram on Bannerghatta Road.
This will be followed by Natysadhana, a workshop on February 23 and 24 by Harshvardhan Singh, a disciple of Birju Maharaj.

‘Essence of life’

‘Essence of Life’, a multimedia production, will be held on February 22, 6 pm at Chowdaiah Hall.

The production is inspired by Jiddu Krishnamurti’s teachings. Artistes from established dance traditions, namely kathak, bharatanatyam, kuchipudi, mohiniyattam and odissi, will come together to bring to life contemporary thought in an engaging manner.
 Musician B Sivaramakrishna Rao and rhythm conceiver D A Srinivas have rendered the music. Singers Sanjeev Abhyankar and Hariharan have lent their voice to these compositions.

The dancers are Pali Chandra (kathak), Smitha Madhav (bharatanatyam), Rashmi Menon (mohiniyattam), Prateeksha Kashi (kuchipudi) and Japan’s foremost odissi exponent Masako Ono.

Festival time
Nrithya Vaibhava, a dance festival, will be held from February 25 to 27 at the Bangalore Gayana Samaja, K R Road.

On February 25, 6.30 pm, Divya Hosakere will present a bharatanatyam recital and at 7.30 pm, Aishwarya Nithyananda will showcase a bharatanatyam performance.
 On February 26, at 6 pm, Poornima Ashok will present a bharatanatyam recital. At 7.30 pm,  Vasundara Doreswamy will present a recital.
On February 27, 6 pm, there will be ‘Parangatha Prashathi’ by N S Krishna Murthy.
 At 6.30 pm, Thyagaraja Vaibhava will be presented by Soundarya Srivathsa, Satyanarayana Raju and Subhashini Vasanth.  

‘Bharata...’

Keshava Nrithya Shala is presenting a unique dance-drama called Bharata Bahubali, under the guidance of Karnataka Kalashree B K Shyam Prakash, on February 23, 6.30 pm at Gayana Samaj, as part of ‘Gamaka Sammelan’. For details, call 9886694202.

Fine footwork

Mime workshop

Niranjan Goswami, a mime exponent and the director of the Indian Mime Theatre, Kolkata will conduct a 10-day mime workshop at Natya Institute of Kathak and Choreography till February 28, 6.30 pm to 8.30 pm. For details, call 23348645.

Illustrated talk
The  International Music and Arts Society is presenting an illustrated talk by architectural art historian George Michell on his  recently released book, ‘Mughal Architecture and Gardens – The lesser known monuments and unexplained enigmas’, with photographs by Amit Pasricha, on March 1, 6 pm at the National Gallery of Modern Art, Palace Road. The talk will be supported by audio visuals.

Literary evening

‘An evening with multifaceted Gopalakrishna Adiga’ wil be held on February 23, 4.30 pm at Suchitra Auditorium, 36, 9th Main, Banashankari 2nd Stage.
