About Jhallari (Gethu Vadyam)
Jhallari is an ancient Percussive instrument, that has mentions in many Puranic and Sangeetha Shastra Granthas. It is also one of the prestigious Ashta Dasha Vaadyas. Although very different in details , Jhallari appears like a Veena, and is played by stroking bamboo sticks on silver strings. For unknown reasons, this magnificent instrument has turned a rarity on the Carnatic stage. Regardless of his age stepping into the 80’s, Sri H Subramanyam works with youthful zest to help revive the wonderful tradition.
