Bengaluru's own flat beans fare, popularly known as 'Avarekai mela' is back. Food aficionados can head to the Food Street near Sajjan Rao Circle in south Bengaluru and tickle their tastebuds savouring a variety of items including payasam, mudde, masala idli and vada---all made of green bean.

More than 40 dishes made of beans grown by farmers of Magadi and surrounding areas will be available from January 7 to 24 between 10am and 11.30pm. The event is organized by Vasavi Condiments.

Swathi Karmakar, whose mother Geetha Shivakuma has been organizing the mela for the past 16 years, said: "Every time, we get overwhelming response. Over 200 farmers from Magadi, Kolar and nearby places work with us. Thousands of farmers' families also join hands to make it a success."

Donate books, get one free

This weekend, there is enough food for thought too. At Pustaka Parishe, visitors can donate their books and pick up another one of their choice. The exhibition will be held from January 9 to 11 at the National College Grounds, Basavangudi.

Bangalore International Centre, (A TERI Initiative) cordially invites you to the screening of  an award winning documentary film “TIMBAKTU”, directed by Rintu Thomas and Sushmit Ghosh.

Guest Speaker: Mr. C K Ganguly (Bablu), Secretary cum Chief functionary, Timbaktu Collective. He will be present to handle the Q & A session after the screening.

About the film

When a small farming community in South India decided to switch from their decades-old practice of chemical agriculture to organic farming, little did they know that they were planting the seeds of a silent revolution. By showcasing the exemplary efforts of farmers of a tiny village (http://www.timbaktu.org) in Andhra Pradesh, the film explores critical issues of food security and sovereignty. At its heart, it looks at the relationship that a farmer shares with her land, her seeds and raises vital questions about food, the very essence of human life. 

About the Directors
Rintu and Sushmit are award-winning filmmakers who have produced and directed films that explore issues of gender and sexuality, HIV AIDS, street children, disability, maternal and child health and environment. They founded Black Ticket Films, a film production agency that has been recognized for creating films with a unique visual language. Their films have been screened at various international film festivals as well as at global platforms like the UN Convention on Climate Change.
Mr. C K Ganguly (Bablu) & Mary Vattamattam
Bablu Ganguly and Mary Vattamattam have worked in the field of rural development for over 35 years. Between 1978 and 1990 they worked with Young India Project, a voluntary organisation working for rights of the agricultural labourers. In 1990, they co-founded the Timbaktu Collective. Bablu was awarded an Ashoka fellowship in 1994 for his work on regenerating and reforesting the common lands. Apart from the work with Timbaktu Collective, Bablu and Mary have also been actively involved in creating and nurturing several state and national level networks of voluntary organizations to support environmental and indigenous people's struggles.
About “Timbaktu Collective”
Initiated in 1990, the Timbaktu Collective has been attempting to respond to the desperate situation and agrarian crisis in 140 villages of Anantapur District in Andhra Pradesh. In 2008, as a natural extension of their work promoting organic farming, Timbaktu Collective helped to set up Dharani Farming and Marketing Mutually Aided Cooperative Society Ltd, a producer owned business enterprise, to procure, process and market the produce of its farmer members. Dharani markets its products under the brand name "Timbaktu Organic".
 

AIM for Seva Presents Yatra by Malavika Sarukkai

 IM (All India Movement) for Seva is an NGO working to improve rural education. Realising that the principal barrier for rural children to attend school was access, AIM for Seva began to build Chatralayas or Free Student Homes(FSH) near schools to accomodate disadvantaged students. Today, the movement is spread across 15 states and has carried out over 130 projects to help rural and tribal children gain education. We house 3,000 resident students and an additional 30,000 others are being benefited. We plan to build 200 more such homes by 2020 in India s most remote and under served areas. Your financial, moral, and physical support will help achieve this target.

 

Dance, Concept and Choreography by Malavika Sarukkai. Another landmark presentation by renowned danseuse Malavika Sarukkai, Yatra describes a journey from the stillness of potentiality to the immense dynamism of spirituality, before coming full circle to rest once more in the womb of silence.The choreographies in Yatra are a form of dynamic meditation wherein the sacred is invoked in the dancing body and the space around it. The dance shifts from being a ‘performance’ to that of ‘experience’ both for dancer and the audience. Musically, Yatra traverses Sanskrit verses in the great tradition of the Srimad Bhagavatam to contemporary poetry. Malavika Sarukkai's work is celebrated by critics, connoisseurs and the general public alike, and her contribution to classical dance is acknowledged in the form of several awards including the Padmashree from the President of India.

Bhoomija's Children's Carnatic Choir

CCC '14 is directed by the energetic and celebrated child prodigy, Abhishek Raghuram. 20 singing angels, a prodigious 15-year-old violinist, a 17-year-old Morsing enthusiast and other young percussionists. With Abhishek Raghuram on the stage, conducting the exquisite repertoire he has put together and trained them on for months now, and challenging them into a duel with him.

Mallika Prasad is the Creative Director of CCC '14. Sonali and Himanshu of The Hidden Harmony have designed the costumes and Dipti Sudhindra of The Jewelry Project, the jewellery for the children. Pooja Jagadeesh has designed the creatives.

Bhoomija's Children's Carnatic Choir is a fundraiser for Drishti, an eye care hospital working in underserved markets. Funds from the Choir go to their free cataract surgery drive. This year, the aim is to raise funds for 1,000 surgeries. Green Channel Logistics Centre is the generous sponsor of CCC '14.
