Bharatanatyam

A bharatanatyam dance recital by Sneha Harish H will be held under ‘Every Friday Cultural Evening Programme’ on October 12, 6.30 pm at Yavanika, State Youth Centre, Nrupathunga Road.

‘Horizon Series’

The Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), in collaboration with Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, will be presenting kathak and  bharatanatyam dances under the ‘Horizon Series’ on October 13, 6.30 pm at the Khincha Auditorium, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Race Course Road.
It will feature Shubha Dhananjay, an empanelled artiste of the ICCR, and her disciples.

Tribute

Abhivyakti, the odissi dance centre, is organising ‘Padmashree Guru Gangadhar Pradhan Tribute Programme’ as a mark of  homage to the late odissi thespian on October 14, 10.30 am.

  The programme includes a talk about Gangadhar Pradhan and dance performances. There will odissi recitals by Lasyapriya Ravishankar, Ishani Mitra, Shwetha Krishna, Sonalika Padhi and Rita Samal.

There will also be bharatanatyam recitals by Pannaga, Ullas, Niriksha, Monisha and Adithi. The venue is Keshava Nrithya Shala Hall, 2105, A, 8th Main, D-Block, 2nd stage, Rajajinagar.
‘Rangapravesha’

Rasika Academy of Performing Arts will present the bharatanatyam rangapravesha of Sirisha Yadav L, a disciple of Kiran Subramanyam and Sandhya Kiran, on October 20, 6.30 pm at ADA Rangamandira, J C Road. 

‘Navaratri’ fest

The ‘Navaratri Cultural Festival’ will be held from October 16 to 24 at Sri Padmavathi Kala Nikethan premises, No. 161B, 2nd Cross, behind State Bank of Mysore, Mathikere Layout. On October 17, 6.30 pm, there will be a bharatanatyam recital by the artistes of Sri Padmavathi Kalanikethan. On October 18, 5.30 pm, musical recitals will be presented by the students of the same institution and by Chintalapalli Jalaja Prasad. At 6.30 pm, there will be yet another musical concert by Srikantham Nagendra Shashtri.

On October 19, 6.30 pm, yakshagana will be presented by Karnataka Kala Darshini and on October 20, 6.30 pm, there will be a clarinet recital by Pandit Narasimhulu Wadvati and team. Watch the kuchipudi dance ballet Shivaganga by artistes of Padmavathi Kalanikethan on October 21. On October 22, 6.30 pm, enjoy a kuchipudi recital by the Shambhavi Dance Ensemble and bharatanatyam by the students of Sri Padmavathi Kalanikethan.

Veena recital by Suma Sudhindra will be held on October 23, 6.30 pm and on October 24, the cultural festival will end with a Mahamangalarathi. For details, call 23379968.

Rock on

‘Vladivar Rock ‘N India Concert’ will feature performances by ‘Slayer’, the American thrash metal band, and Carlos Santana at Bhartiya City. Slayer will perform on October 20 and Carlos Santana’s signature afro-latino blues rock fusion will be held on October 26.

Mixed genres

The 8th edition of ‘The Great Indian Octoberfest’ will take place at Jayamahal Palace from October 12 to 14 and will see musicians and bands of different genres perform — from hard rock and blues to heavy metal and electronica.

The festival will be spread across four stages — the world stage, quick tree arena, premium live wire arena and the main stage.

October 12 will see artistes like ‘Shaa’ir + Func’, ‘Soulmate’, Advaita, Lagori, Hari and Sukhmani, ‘Allegro Fudge’, Shantanu Pandit and Tennessee melodic metal band, ‘Gone in April’, take the stage.

 The electronica set by ‘BLOT’ and the Taalavattam psychedelic set up are also performing.

Some old and familiar bands as well as a lot of new faces will be seen on October 13, with acts like Sunidhi Chauhan, ‘Papon & East India Company’, DJ Vachan, ‘Indian Ocean’, Bhayanak Maut, ‘Bay Beat Collective’ and UK-based rock band ‘Cypher 16’. Finnish metal band, ‘Children of Bodom’, is the festival headliner and will perform on October 14.

In concert

Saraswathi Gana Sabha is organising the ‘Sree Guruvayurappan Bhajan Samaj Trust Monthly Music Concert’ by Mohan Santhanam on October 14, 5 pm at Unnati Centre, No. 1, Ganesha Temple Road, NGEF Layout, Sadananda Nagar.

Orchestra

The first-ever national orchestra of Carnatic musicians, directed by veena maestro Jayanthi Kumaresh, will be held on October 14, 6 pm at Bangalore Gayana Samaj.

‘Jugalbandi’

A Carnatic-Hindustani jugalbandi vocal concert by Sriram Parasuram and Anuradha Sriram has been organised by the Indiranagar Sangeetha Sabha at Purandara Bhavana, 8th Main, HAL Second Stage, Indiranagar on October 13, 6 pm. Charulatha Ramanujam and H S Sudhindra will be on the violin and mridangam respectively in Carnatic style. Ravindra Yavagal and Vyasamurti Katti will accompany the artistes on tabla and harmonium in Hindustani style.

Great act

Young talent

Sarala Birla Academy will present ‘Beauty and the Beast’ on October 12 and 13 at the Jyoti Nivas College Auditorium. More than 120 children will showcase their acting, singing and dancing skills as they endeavour to narrate the tale of a young prince.
Bard’s plays

The ‘Ranga Shankara Theatre Festival’ will be held from October 27 to November 11. This year, the theme celebrates William Shakespeare. In store at the festival are productions from different corners of the world and two from India. From Mumbai, there are Atul Kumar’s ‘Twelfth Night’ and Sunil Shanbag’s ‘All’s Well That Ends Well’. And from overseas, the plays include Dhaka Theatre’s ‘The Tempest’ from Bangladesh; and Marjanishvili’s ‘As You Like It’ from Georgia. The opening ceremony  will usher in the festival with a theatrical ensemble that will feature renowned theatre personalities. There will be a sonnet recitation evening, screenings of two films based on his work, arts’ appreciation course, solo performances by renowned theatre personalities, a poster-design competition, Shakespeare readings in the parks and more. Intricate pieces

An exhibition of arts and crafts from West Bengal and Orissa is being held at Safina Plaza till October 14.
The timing is from 10 am to 8.30 pm. The exhibition has crafts people from all over India participating.

Walk on

‘Pratimale’

Kala Premi Foundation is presenting Pratimale by Shatavadhani R Ganesh and a team of scholars on October 13, 6.30 pm. Pratimale is an ancient literary entertainment form of our country which dates back to more than 3,000 years. The venue is Seva Sadan auditorium, Malleswaram.

‘Choli Bazaar’

Photo exhibition

B N P Paribas will be presenting ‘Women Changing India’, a photo exhibition at the Chitrakala Parishat, from October 13 to 20, 10.30 am to 7.30 pm. On display will be  the works of six acclaimed Magnum photographers — Martine Franck, Alex Webb, Patrick Zachmann, Alessandra Sanguinetti, Olivia Arthur and Raghu Rai, who have documented the changing roles, aspirations, opportunities and challenges that Indian women face, whether they live in villages or cities.
