Theatre festival
The ‘Ranga Shankara Theatre Festival’ will be held from October 27 to November 11. This year, the theme celebrates William Shakespeare. In store at the festival are productions from different corners of the world and two from India. From Mumbai, there are Atul Kumar’s ‘Twelfth Night’ and Sunil Shanbag’s ‘All’s Well That Ends Well’. And from overseas, the plays include Dhaka Theatre’s ‘The Tempest’ from Bangladesh; and Marjanishvili’s ‘As You Like It’ from Georgia. The opening ceremony will usher in the festival with a theatrical ensemble that will feature renowned theatre personalities. There will see a sonnet recitation evening, screenings of two films based on his work, arts’ appreciation course, solo performances by renowned theatre personalities, a poster-design competition, Shakespeare readings in the parks and more. ‘Krafff’
Le Fracas, Centre Dramatique National Montluçon, France and The Alliance Française de Bangalore are presenting ‘Krafff’ in collaboration with the Embassy of France, Avantha and Ranga Shankara. Directed by Johanny Bert, Krafff combines puppetry, theatre and dance. It places on stage a dancer and a paper figurine that embark on an unusual pas de deux.
One of the striking features of this show is that the puppet is created (and guided) in full view of audiences by four artists with the help of long strips of craft paper that they unfold, fold, crumple and twist. This will be held on October 6, 7.30 pm at Ranga Shankara
Exhibition
An exhibition of arts and crafts from West Bengal and Orissa is being held at Safina Plaza till October 14. The timing is from 10 am to 8.30 pm. The exhibition has crafts people from all over India participating.
Film screening
The film ‘Nargis: When Time Stopped Breathing’ from Burma will be screened at Suchitra Academy on October 5, 7 pm.
It is directed by Kyaw Kyaw Oo and Maung Myint Aung. After cyclone ‘Nargis’ hit Myanmar’s Ayeyarwaddy delta in May 2008 and took away at least 140,000 lives, a few young Burmese film-makers assembled a film crew and quickly set off for the delta to document a disaster, which is ‘Nargis...’. On October 7, 5 pm, ‘Journey to Yarsa’ from Nepal will be screened. It is directed by Dipendra Bhandari.
Folk works
RIFED (Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation of India Ltd) is organising an exhibition of paintings by tribal artists called Aadi Chitra at Chitrakala Parishat till October 4. The timing is 10 am to 7 pm. The paintings present creative expressions of about 40 tribal artists belonging to Gond, Bhil, Rathwa, Saura and Warli tribes of Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Orissa and Maharashtra respectively.
They depict themes ranging from religious to secular, from gods and goddesses to animals and birds, life cycle from birth, death, marriage, farming, harvest, celebration, and the five basic elements of earth.
‘CSB Santhe’
Community services of Bangalore will be holding their annual exhibition, CSB Santhe, at Karnataka Chitrakala Parishat on October 7, 10 am to 6 pm. There will be eco-friendly products to unique household articles, hand-woven and silk saris, designer dresses, kurtis, tunics, silver jewellery, home-baked goodies and some tasty street food. Kannada Classes
Kannada Prasaara Parishat, a non-profit organisation, will start its next batch of spoken Kannada, Kannada script learning classes in separate batches from October 7.
The classes are held only on Sundays, from 10 am to 1 pm, at the Hosmat Hospital premises, Magrath Road. Successful candidates will be awarded certificates of merit. For details, call 9448878569.

‘Music Discourse: An Evening of Khayal and Thumris’ by Sumathi Murthy will be held at the auditorium, Alliance Française de Bangalore on October 5, 7 pm.
Sumathi Murthy will be accompanied on tabla by Pandit Guru Murthy Vaidya and on harmonium by S R Ramakrishna.
DANCE
A bharatanatyam group recital by principal of Aradhana School of Dance, vidwan Nagabhushana, will be held under the ‘Every Friday Cultural Evening Programme’ on October 5, 6.30 pm at Yavanika, State Youth Centre, Nrupathunga Road.
‘Samanvay...’
As part of the ‘Samanvay Arts Festival’, Sri Rajarajeshwari Kala Niketan will present on October 7, 10 am to 12 noon, a kuchipudi recital by Sangeetha Phaneesh and Hema Gautam.
There will be a bharatanatyam recital by M V Giridhar, odissi by Madhulitha Mohapatra, kathakali by Prabal Gupta and bharatanatyam by Sai Arts International, choreographed by Suparna Ven#katesh.
The venue is Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. On the same day, 6 pm, there will be a bharatanatyam performance by Swetha Kasetty and the students of Rajarajeshwari Kala Niketan, odissi by Vandana and Supriya, bharatanatyam by Devraj, contemporary dance by Sowmya Jaganmurthy and bharatanatyam by Chitkala School Of Dance.
