DRAMA

Theatre workshopA one-day theatre appreciation course will be held at Alliance Francaise, in association with Bangalore Little Theatre (BLT), on December 1, from 10 am to 5 pm. The programme will be conducted by an experienced team from BLT, led by Vijay Padaki, a theatre educator with over 50 years of experience as an actor, director, designer and administrator. The sessions during the day will be interactive, and will include exercises, films and active participation by all present.

Music


Symphony orchestra


The launch of the ‘Indian National Symphony Orchestra’ will be held on December 2, 7 pm at the Grand Ballroom, Leela Palace. The orchestra will be under the aegis of the William Joseph Music Foundation. Admission to the concert is through invitations only.
It is the only symphony orchestra in the country that has only professional Indian musicians.  It will be under the directorship of conductor Ashley Williams.

The performance titled ‘Global Peace and Harmony Concert’, was conceptualised over five years ago in an attempt to promote global peace and harmony through music and its performances.This year’s concert would feature Mendelssohn’s ‘9th Symphony’, ‘Land of Hope and Glory’ by Edvard Elgar and popular classical music. The guest soloists for the evenings concert would be acclaimed Soprano Duangdao Chayasirisobhon and Baritone Mongkol Chayasirisobhon. For details, call 9844119956.

Collaborative spirit
MoonArra, the world fusion band comprising Madhuri Jagadeesh, Jagadeesh M R, Prakash Sontakke, Kartik Mani and Wilson Kenneth, completes its three-year journey with a concert-production at Jagriti Theatre, Whitefield on December 8. The 120-minute production will reflect the collaborative spirit of MoonArra beginning with a jazz poet introducing how sound travelled from Africa to India via other continents, showcasing some of the finest voices in Indian classical, jazz and other genres. There will also be the story of music brought to light by dramatic narration with creative appearances by talented actors, musicians, presenters, writers, dance by classically trained and contemporary dancers.

Key notes
A piano concert by Raj Bhimani, a pianist from New York, will be held on December 1, 7 pm at  the St Mark’s Cathedral, 1 MG Road. it is being organised by the ‘Forum for Teachers of Western Classical Music’. For details, call 22215304.

Carnatic vocal
A Carnatic vocal music concert by M S Sheela will be held on November 30, 6 pm at  SRLK Mandira Concert Hall. This programme is organised by the Department of Kannada and Culture.

‘Colours of...’
A vocal concert, ‘Colours of Kalyan’, by Narasimha Murthy will be held at Bangalore International Centre, Teri Complex, Teri Complex, 4th Main, 2nd Cross, Domlur II Stage, on December 7, 6.30 pm. For details, call 25359680.

Beautiful ensemble

Banyan Tree’s annual sufi and mystic music festival Ruhaniyat will be held on December 15 at Jayamahal Palace. Those will be performing include Tannouras, the Dancing Dervishes of Egypt; ‘Polyphony’, with an inbuilt ‘Voice of Angels’ by singers from Bulgaria, an instrumental ensemble of sufiana maqams by musicians of Egypt and Rajasthan; ‘Whirling Dervishes’ of Turkey, Sufi Qawwali by qawwals from Pakistan.

The Indian forms to be featured this year are Bharud and Abhang of Tukaram, Dnyaneshwar, Jana Bai, Bahina Bai (Maharashtra), Sukhnani Ojhapalli (Assam), Kapalik Pandvani, dramatic narration of mystic tales from Mahabharata (Chhattisgarh), Mystic Ravanhatta Ensemble with songs from the Pabuji ki Par (Rajasthan), Haunting drums - Eddakya, Thimila, Chenda, Thavil, Mizhavu (Kerala), Sindhi Saraiki of Gujarat,  Zikr-e- Rifay by Fakirs -Andhra Pradesh,  Baul songs from West Bengal etc.


Hip-hop

Canadian hip-hop artiste Kardinal Offishall will perform at Pebbles on November 30,6 pm. The Toronto-bred star has performed at some of the most prestigious stadiums, arenas and festivals across the globe.

Gala event


The inaugural of ‘Short +Sweet Corporate Festival’ will be held at Jagriti Theatre, Whitefield till December 2. It is a multilingual (English, Hindi and Kannada) festival. Performances will be judged both by audience votes and by a judging panel of esteemed theatre and corporate personalities. The festival will conclude with a gala finale on December 2.

Memorial lecture
Bangalore Initiative for Religious Dialogue (BARD) and Y’s Men International are holding the ‘11th Rev Dr Stanley Samartha Memorial Lecture’ by Israel Selvanayagam, professor, Department of Religions, Gurukul Theological College and Research Institute, on ‘Commitment and openness in a multi-faith context’ at the Tagore Hall, United Theological College, 63 Miller’s Road, behind Cantonment Station, on November 30, 4.30 pm.

Christmas bazaar
The annual ‘United Charities Bazaar 2012’, a Christmas bazaar, will be held on December 1 at the Corporation playground, opposite St Charle’s School, Lingarajpuram Main Road.

Cinema world

A celebration of Indian cinema, called ‘Project Cinema City’ is being held in the City. A part of the project is on view till December 2, at the inter-disciplinary exhibition at NGMA, Palace Road.

Digital collages
An exhibition of digital collages and book covers, ‘The Art of the Book’ by Sunandini Banerjee is being held at Goethe-Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan till December 2, 2 pm to 6.30 pm. Entry is free. For details, call 25205305.

The prize distribution of the ‘Childrens’ Day’ Cultural Festival 2012’ will be held on November 30, 5.30 pm at The Indian Institute of World Culture, No. 6, B P Wadia Road, Basavanagudi.

Youth conference
Goethe-Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan, in partnership with the University of Bremen, Germany and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), is presenting the second international environmental youth conference ‘Greening with Goethe’ .
This is an interdisciplinary environmental project that has been awarded the UNESCO tag of ‘Project of the Decade’. It will be inaugurated on December 1 at 10 am.
The venue is Indian Institute of Science, Satish Dhawan Hall. ‘Greening with Goethe’ is a part of the ‘Year of Germany and India 2011-2012: Infinite Opportunities’. ‘Rangapravesha’


Kiran Subramanyam and Sandhya Kiran are presenting the bharata­natyam rangapravesha of their daughter and disciple, Rasika Kiran, on December 1, 6.30 pm at Chowdiah Memorial Hall.

 Performances


The ‘Attendance 2012 Awards’ will be given away on December 1, 6.30 pm at Alliance Francaise. Conducted as part of the ‘2012 Dance DISCourse Series’, the evening will also have dance performances. The award winners are Sanjay Shantaram, Navtej Singh Johar, Syed Pasha, Shridhar-Anuradha, M R Krishnamurthy and Maya Rao.

Spellbinding steps

Natyasaraswathi Kuchipudi Dance Academy, Sanjayanagar is presenting its 17th annual dance celebrations on December 9, 9 am at Seva Sadan, Malleswaram. Kuchipudi dance and Spanish flamenco by Jana and Danielle, who are guest dancers from Europe, will be held on December 12, 6 pm, as a part of Prathibhasangama, at ADA Rangamandira, J C Road.
