Pot Pourri

Trade expo

The craftsmen of the north-eastern states are presenting an exhibition of exquisite hand-knotted and handspun crafts at the ‘North-East Trade Expo’  at Ascendas Park Square Mall, ITPB till July 21. The time is 10 am to 9 pm. The expo showcases the richness and variety of crafts from all the states in the north-east.

Kannada classes

Kannada Prasaara Parishat, a non-profit organisation, is holding its next batch of spoken Kannada script reading, writing and higher Kannada classes in separate batches. The classes are held on Sundays from10 am to 1 pm at the Hosmat Hospital premises, Magrath Road. Successful candidates will be awarded certificates of merit. For details, call 9448878569.

Talk

A talk on ‘Governing a Megacity’ by A Ravindra will be held on July 25, 6.30 pm at Bangalore International Centre, Teri Complex, 4th Main, 2nd Cross, Domlur II Stage. A Ramachandran will chair and moderate the
discussion.

‘Anjuman’

Anjuman, an evening of Hindi poetry, will be held at Atta Galatta, Koramangala on July 21, 6 pm. 

Fun time

Hennessy Artistry India Club Series is showcasing ‘The Global Art of Mixing’ with performances by Aquarius Heaven and Char Lee on July 19, 8 pm onwards at Ice Bar, Vivanta by Taj.

‘Indian Diva’

The Bangalore auditions for the ‘Indian Diva 2013’ will be held on August 2. The City auditions will culminate in the final round of auditions in Mumbai, where the lucky finalists will be shortlisted and selected to take part in ‘Indian Diva 2013’. The grand finale will be held in Mumbai. The ‘Indian Diva 2013’ will compete in ‘Miss Universe 2013’, in November, in Moscow. ‘Naad Bhed’


Spicmacay and Doordarshan are presenting a national competition of classical music for children. Called Naad Bhed, it will have masters of Indian classical music as judges. The regional rounds of the competition will be held at Doordarshan’s 20 regional kendras, including Bangalore. The awards can be won in categories such as ‘Vid MS Subbalaxmi Yuvapuraskar’ (Carnatic vocal); ‘Vid Sheikh Chinna Maulana Yuvapuraskar’ (Carnatic instrumental); ‘Vid Palghat Mani Aiyar Yuvapuraskar’ (accompanist); ‘Pt Bhimsen Joshi  Yuvapuraskar’ (Hindustani Vocal); ‘Pt Ravishankar Yuvapuraskar’ (Hindustani instrumental); ‘Ustad Allah Rakha Yuvapuraskar’ (Hindustani accompanist). Walkathon


The Community Services of Bangalore, in association with Nova Speciality Surgery, Koramangala, is organising a ‘Walking Tall For Charity’, a walkathon on July 28, 7.30 am at Cubbon Park. Fine collection

Nilambari, a collection of the weaving tradition of Varanasi, will be on display at Vermilion House, 3/12 Cleveland Road Cross, Fraser Town on July 18 and 19, 10.30 am to 7 pm.

‘Red Ant Dream’, a documentary film by Sanjay Kak, will be screened on July 21, 5.30 pm at Bangalore International Centre, Teri Complex, 4th Main, 2nd Cross, Domlur II Stage.

Rich variety

‘The Silk and Cotton Fab of India’ will be held till July 24, 11 am to 7.30 pm at Chitrakala Parishat. Artisans from the Gramin Hathkargha Audhyogik Utpadan Sahkari Samiti will be exhibiting their ethnic weaves and traditional handloom products. More than 50 designers and artisans from across the country are part of this year’s exhibition.

Music

Double treat
Carnatic rock band Agam will perform at the CounterCulture, Whitefield on July 19, 9 pm and Mumbai-based Siddharth Basrur will perform at the same venue on July 20, 9 pm. Agam is a multiple award-winning contemporary Carnatic rock act.

‘Sound Awake’

‘Sound Awake’, the Electronic Dance Music festival, a platform for performances by top international artistes being presented by DNA Entertainment Networks Private Limited, will be held on August 4, Supernova Arena and Convention Centre, Yelahanka, Airport Road.

Vocal notes

A Carnatic classical vocal recital by Sukanya Prabhakar will be held on July 20, 6 pm at Keshava Samskruti Sabha, 556, Samskruti Bhavana, 11th Main, ISRO Layout. She will be accompanied by CN Chandrashekar on violin and Layakala Pratibhamani Anooru R Ananthakrishna Sharma on mridangam.

Folk fusion

Swarathma, the Bangalore-based folk fusion band, will be playing at Hard Rock CafĂ©, St Mark’s Road on July 18, 8.30 pm.

Soulful tunes

A Hindustani classical vocal music performance by Gopalkrishna Bhagwath (vocal), NG Hegde (tabla) and Gajanana Sabhahit (harmonium), will be held on July 20, 6.30 pm at New Conference Hall, MES College, Vidya­sa­gara Prof MPL Sastry Road, 15th Cross, Malleswaram.

Flute recital     
                                          
Nadasurabhi Cultural Association is organising a flute recital by Kalaimamani Sikkil Mala Chandrasekhar on July 21, 4.15 pm at The Indian Heritage Academy Hall, near Police Station, 6th Block, Koramangala. Nalina Mohan will be on violin, R Sankaranarayanan on mridangam and Sukanya Ramgopal on ghatam.

Veena strains

J Yoga Vandana will present a veena recital on July 21, 5.30 pm at Vivekananda Hall, Adarsha College, RT Nagar. The programme is being conducted under the joint auspices of RT Nagar Cultural Association and Karnataka Gaana Kala Parishath. Yoga Vandana will be accompanied by Ranjani Venkatesh on mridangam and Srishyla on ghatam.

‘Rangapravesha’

The kuchipudi rangapravesha of Nithya Chalapathy, a disciple of Dharani Kashyap, will be held at ADA Rangamandira on July 21, 5.45 pm.

Mixed fare

Svanubhava will present a Carnatic classical concert by Abhishek Raghuram, a bharatanatyam performance by Anuradha Sridhar and Sridhar, puppetry by Anupama Hoskere and group, kalaripayattu and more, on July 19 and 20 from 9 am to 4 pm at the Bangalore Gayana Samaja, KR Road. Each presentation will be
followed by an interaction with the artistes.

Yakshagana

The Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) will be presenting a yakshagana by Sudhakar Jain, as part of the ‘Every Friday Cultural Evening Programme’, on July 19, 6.30 pm at Yavanika, State Youth Centre, Nrupathunga Road.

‘Nrityaarpana’

Svasti Art Foundation is presenting Nrityaarpana, a bharatanatyam recital by Swathi Vellal on July 21,

The International Arts and Cultural Foundation is presenting Nartana Avartana, a global Indian classical dance recital by Gayathri Sriram, director, Shruti Laya Dance School, Singapore and Soundarya Srivathsa, director, Nartana Keertana. This is being held in association with ICCR and Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan on July 20, 6 pm at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan.

Art

‘Many Worlds’

Kynkyny Art is presenting ‘Many Worlds’, featuring the mixed-media murals of Basuki Dasgupta at Kynkyny Art from July 18 to August 14. A master of contemporary folk art, the Tumkur-based artist turns grand, weighty themes like folklore and mythology into abstract, quirky, almost minimalist images.

‘Jugalbandi’

A solo show of illustrations, photographs and installations by Vimal Chandran will be held till July 28 at Thalam, Level 2, 80, Krishna Reddy Colony, Domlur. The show is a jugalbandi of various creative media including photographs, illustrations, audio and video installations.

Impressive work

‘Homelands - A 21st Century Story of Home, Away, And All the Places in Between’, a contemporary art exhibition by Suki Dhanda, will he held till August 14 at the National Gallery of Modern Art, Palace Road. It is curated by Latika Gupta.

‘Esoteric...’

A series of abstract original paintings, under the theme ‘Esoteric Expressions’, will be on display till July 31, from 10 am to 8 pm, at Magnitude Gallery, 27th Cross, 13th Main, 3rd Block, Jayanagar. This collection will present non-representational and subtle magic of vibrant colours and media.

‘Of Sounds...’

‘Of Sounds and Silences’, an exhibition of copper sculptures by Raviram Ramakrishnan, will be held at Galerie De’Arts, 11th floor, Barton Centre from July 19 to August 8.

‘Plot’

‘Plot’, an exhibition by Sreshta Rit Premnath, will be on display at Galleryske, Berlie Street, Langford Town, till August 24.

‘Infinity Divinity’

‘Infinity Divinity’, a week-long show by artist Vinod Banaik, will be held at Gallery-g, Lavelle Road till July 24, 11 am to 7 pm.

Group show

A group show of paintings will be held till July 20 at Renaissance Gallerie. Paintings by Gananaselvam, Babu, Karthik, Ragu and Sathish will be on display.

‘The Last...’

‘The Last Harvest’, an exhibition of paintings by Rabindranath Tagore’, will be held at the NGMA, Palace Road, till July 28.

Exclusive stuff

Artist Milind Nayak is showcasing some of his best works till August 16. The venue is The Studio, 26/2, between 1st and 2nd Cross, D’Costa Layout, Cooketown. The timing is 11 am to 6 pm (Monday to Saturday) and 2 pm to 6 pm (Sundays).

Kannada play

VASP is presenting the Kannada play Avanu Ghazal... Avalu Shayari.. on July 21, 7 pm at K H Kalasoudha, Hanumanthnagar.

‘SMS’

WeMove Theatre is staging its play ‘SMS’ on July 21, 7.30 pm at the Alliance Francaise. It is written and directed by Abhishekh Iyengar.
