MUSIC

Gypsy tunes

Norig, a dynamic singer who sings Eastern European gypsy music, will perform at Alliance Francaise on September 6, 7.30 pm.

Of Spanish origin, she took lessons in music from Martina Catella, a famous ethno-musicologist.

She then began to diffuse the music of the great singers of Romania and the Balkans. Musicians accompanying Norig are Mathias Levy (violin), Olivier Lorang (double bass) and Joris Viquesnel (guitar).

Vocal delight

Subhalakshmi Krishnamoorthy, Carnatic vocalist, will present a recital on September 9, 6.30 pm as part of Ganeshotsava at Sree Ganapathi Temple and Education Trust, BEML Layout, Basaveswaranagar.

‘Grey Shack’

Groove to rock music by ‘Grey Shack’ at Hard Rock Café on September 5, 8.30 pm onwards. The brainchild of Vi­k­r­am, Rohan and Tomojit, ‘Grey Shack’ was formed so­metime in mid-July 2007, after which they went on to play gigs in and around Chennai.

Hindustani recital

Hindustani Sangeeta Kalakara Mandali and Gokhale Institute of Public Affairs is holding‘Smt Muthubai and Sri Nagesh Rao Mane Memorial Concert’ on September 14, 6 pm at Gokhale Institute of Public Affairs, near BMS College of Engineering, Bull Temple Road, NR Colony.

On the occasion, there will be a Hindustani vocal recital by Vijaykumar Patil, a disciple of Kaivalyakumar Gurav. He will be accompanied by Satish Kolli on harmonium and Keshav Joshi on tabla.

Dance

Yakshagana

The Students of Yakshakala Academy will be presenting a yakshagana recital on September 7, 7 pm at KH Kalasoudha, Hanumanthanagar. They will enact Bhishmotpatti written by Halasinahalli Narasima Shastree in 1900. It is directed by Krishnamurthy Thunga. The event is organised by Sarvasva.

Many talents

The Soorya Festival Bangalore 2013 is scheduled to be held at the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Race Course Road till September 7. The troupes and artistes performing are Tandava Troupe, Rani Khanam (kathak), ‘Bangalore Brothers’ (Carnatic vocal), Manjari (Hindustani vocal), Sanjana Arun and Deepti (bharatanatyam) and Neyveli Santhanagopalan (Carnatic vocal).

Bharatanatyam


Vaishnavi Natyashala is presenting the bharatanatyam recital of Kruthika Jayakumar, as part of the Yuva Sourabha programme, on September 11, 6.30 pm at Nayana Auditorium, behind Ravindra Kalakshetra.

‘Rangapravesha’


Drishti Art Centre is presenting the bharat­anatyam rangapravesha of Kruti Waghmare, a disciple of Anuradha Vikranth, on September 7, 6.30 pm at Chowdaiah Memorial Hall. The venue is Sri Venugopalaswamy Temple, 11th Cross, Malleswaram.

Myriad expressions

A bharatanatyam dance recital by Rangashree B, under the ‘Every Friday Cultural Evening Programme’, will be held on September 6, 6.30 pm at Yavanika, State Youth Centre, Nrupathunga Road.

ART

‘Kahaani’
Kahaani - Part 2, a solo show by Bolgum Nagesh Goud, will be on at ITC Windsor Manor, till September 5, 11 am to 7 pm.

On display

HCG Foundation is organising a contemporary art show called Alae till September 30, from 10 am to 6 pm, at Swasti Contemporary Art Gallery. From drawings and paintings to graphics, the show will have interesting art works on display. The participating artists are JMS Mani from Bangalore, Sunitha Varma from Rajpur, Jayaraj from Chennai and Ravindra Salve from Delhi just to mention a few.

‘Fleur Scape’


‘Fleur Scape’, a show of black and white photographs by Monalisa Bhowmick and Parikshit Ghosh will be on show at Renaissance Gallerie till September 7. This is a study of the forms and shapes of flowers and their play in light and dark.

Annual show
Galerie Sara Arakkal is hosting its ‘10th Annual Show 2013’ on September 7, 11 am. It will have paintings by Yusuf Arakkal, Asma Menon, CF John, Azis TM, Babu Namboodiri etc.

 Great journey
‘Michael Kenna - A Journey though Asia’, a photography exhibition, showcasing 48 black and white photographs taken by Michael Kenna during his travels through India, Thailand, Vietnam, China, South Korea and Japan, is being held at Tasveer, Sua House, 26/1 Kasturba Cross Road till October 31. 

DRAMA

‘Dear Liar’


The India Foundation for the Arts will present ‘Dear Liar’ on September 5, 7.30 pm at Chowdaiah Hall. It features Naseeruddin Shah and Ratna Pathak Shah. Comedian Russell Peters will perform as part of ‘The Russell Peters Notorious World Tour’ at the Koramangala Indoor Stadium on October 31. Tickets for the show is available from September 3 on www.nh7.in and www.bookmyshow.com

Kriyative Theatre will present Singarevva Mattu Aramane at Ranga Shankara on September 5, 7.30 pm. The duration of the play is 80 minutes. Tickets are available at the venue in advance. They can also be

‘Jodi Aar...’


Enad will be presenting Badal Sarkar’s comedy Jodi Aar Ekbaar on September 7, 4 pm and 7 pm at ADA Rangamandira. This play was once produced by Shambhu Mitra and Ramaprasad Banik, 39 years ago.

‘Aaine’


Aaine, a play in Hindi, directed by Kamal Pruthi, will be held on September 8, 7 pm at Atta Galatta,134, KHB Colony, 5th Block, Koramangala.

‘Avanu Ghazal...
VASP is presenting Avanu Ghazal... Avalu Shayari..., a romantic play written by Mahesh NC and directed by Vinay Shastry on September 10, 7.30 pm onwards at Ranga Shankara.

 ‘Moliere Tonight!
Storytellers from Bangalore Little Theatre will bring six irreverently funny vignettes from the works of France’s best loved playwright Jean Baptiste Poquelain aka Moliere on September 7 and 8, 7 pm in an event called ‘Moliere Tonight!’ at Alliance Francaise. They take you on a laughter-filled ride through the life of a man remembered fondly even centuries after his time. The graduates of 2013’s ‘Summer Project On Theatre’ sing and dance to bring alive Moliere’s best known characters. The hornswoggler and the swashbuckler, the social climber and the pill popper, the middle-aged rake and drunken quack all come together to make for evening of rib-tickling fun albeit not without some contemplation on own situations. Adapted from ‘Moliere Alive!’ by Vijay Padaki, the play is directed by Priya Venkatesh and Naveen Tater. Entry is free.

 Film world

The ‘Italian Film Festival’ will be held on September 6, 7 and 8, at Bangalore International Centre, Teri Complex, 4th Main, 2nd Cross, Domlur 2nd Stage.

‘The Provenance...’


A talk by Sadanand Menon on late artist Bhupen Khakhar titled ‘The Provenance of the Penis in the Works of Bhupen Khakhar’, will be held at the NGMA auditorium, Palace Road on September 5, 5 pm.

Comedy festival

‘The Comedy Central Chuckle Festival’ will take place on September 6, from 6 pm, at Manpho Convention Centre.

It will feature some of the most famous comedians such as Gabriel ‘Fluffy’ Iglesias, Eddie Ifft, Paul Varghese and will be hosted by India’s own Tanmay Bhat.

Talk time
On September 6, 6 pm, as part of ‘Sri B Suryaprakash Memorial Endowment Lecture’, a talk called ‘Rahu-Saturn Conjunction of September 25th and Indian Affairs’ by BK Sainatha Gandlur, president, Parasari Astro Research Foundation, will be held at the Indian Institute
of World Culture, Basavanagudi.

Creative streak


Suchitra Film Society Bangalore, in collaboration with Gothenburg University – School Film Directing, Goethe Institute-Max Muller Bhavan, Alliance Francaise and Polish Minister of Culture, are calling for entries to the ‘4th Suchitra Short Film Festival’ for emerging film-makers. Entries are due by September 10. The festival will take place from September 20 to 22 in Bangalore. More than 15 countries will be participating. The entry fee for professionals is Rs 500 and for students, it is Rs 200. There will be no refund, if the film is not selected. Some of the engagements during the festival will be workshops, panel discussions and sessions by Juhi Chaturvedi (script writer of ‘Madras Café’ and ‘Vicky Donor’), Ramesh Aravind (actor/director), Prakash Belawadi (actor/director).
