POT POURRI

Talk

Philip Thrupp, trainer in speech, drama and public speaking, will conduct a workshop and interaction with theatre practitioners and teachers at the British Library on October 25, 4.30 pm. Philip is a graduate from The London School of
Management and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and will be examining for Trinity College, London.

‘I am Micro’

NGMA, in collaboration with Maraa and Bangalore Film Society, is holding the screening of ‘I am Micro’ by Shumona Goel and Shai Heredia and ‘The Human Factor’ by Rudradeep Bhattacharjee, on October 27, 4.30 pm at NGMA, Palace Road. The film-makers will be present for a discussion.

Toon trip

The Indian Institute of Cartoonists is organising an exhibition of political cartoons and caricatures titled ‘The Politickle Pickle’, by Shreyas Navare till October 26 at Indian Cartoon Gallery, No.1, Midford House, Midford Garden, off MG Road, Trinity Circle. 

Laugh out

Comedian Russell Peters will perform as part of ‘The Russell Peters Notorious World Tour’ at the Koramangala Indoor Stadium on October 31 and Nov 1. Tickets for both shows will be available on www.nh7.in and www.bookmyshow.com 

Book launch

Dronequill Publishers and Alliance Francaise are holding a discussion on ‘Guilty Until Proven Innocent?’ with Chiranjeev Singh, KR Usha and Rajeev Gowda, to launch KS Dakshina Murthy’s ‘The Anopheles Sting’ on October 28, 6.30 pm at Alliance Francaise, Thimmaiah Road.

Kannada classes

Kannada Prasaara Parishat, a non-profit organisation, will start its next batch of spoken Kannada classes and Kannada script read-write learning classes in separate batches. The classes will be held only on Sundays, from 10 am to 1 pm, on Hosmat Hospital premises, Magrath Road. Candidates will also be awarded certificates of merit. For details, call 9448878569.

Sari splendour

On the occasion of Deepavali, Usha Sridhar, the Chennai-based designer, is organising an exhibition-cum-sale of designer saris at Canara Union, 42, 13th Cross, 8th Main, Malleswaram from October 24 to 27. It will have rich kancheepuram silks in checks, stripes, circular and vertical woven designs. The traditional silk sari has been given a contemporary spin that goes down well with youngsters. Another special aspect of the collection is the fusing of rasipuram light weight silk with heavy kanchi silk. The exhibition will also have plain, block-printed kanchi, rasipuram and tusser silk in pastel shades among others.

ART

‘Radha Raman’

Ritu Gupta’s solo exhibition Radha Raman will be on at the Karnataka Chitrakala Parishat till October 26.

‘3 View’

‘3 View’, an amalgamation of art works of three artists – Buwa Shete, Om Swami and Mohammad Osman – will be on display from October 25 to November 15 (10 am to 6 pm) at Gallery-g, Lavelle Road.

Creative works

‘Art with Heart’, an exhibition and sale of works as seen through the eyes of two artists — photographer CR Sathyanarayana and emerging talent Yashas Vishwanath —  will be held on October 25, 26 and 27 at Alliance Francaise.

While one uses his camera to create evocative pictures, the other wields a brush to re-create the photographs in oil paint.

This is being done in aid of the construction of the Rotary Orchards Senior Citizens’ Home.


Group show

A group show will be held till October 26 at the Renaissance Gallerie. Paintings on display will be by Ankur A Bhatt, Anirban Basak, Aparna Warade, Peenu Singh and Uddandam Laxmi Prasad.

MUSIC

Infectious energy

‘HeavyWater’ will perform at Alliance Francaise on October 25, 6 pm. It is a band formed and based in Bangalore comprising people from Manipur across different industries, mostly IT.

Carnatic delight

Sri Rama Lalitha Kala Mandira is holding a Carnatic vocal concert by Manda Sudharani of Vishakhapatnam on October 27, 5.30 pm at SRLK Mandira Concert Hall, 9th Main, Banashankari 2nd Stage.

She has contributed significant work in the field of Pallavi singing and has received many prestigious awards. She will be assisted on the violin by BK Raghu, on mridangam by GS Ramanujam and on morsing by VS Ramesh.

Rocking bands

On the occasion of its first anniversary, Garage Jam brings a musically power-packed evening as they line up bands from the City to pay tribute to one of the biggest bands in the world, ‘Megadeth’. The event will be held at Sonido Musicals, opposite Catholic Club, Brigade Road on October 25, 4 pm. The line-up includes ‘Fantom’, ‘Livide’, ‘D.E.A.F’, ‘Nurotia’ and ‘Counterplot Theory’.

Folk form

British folk band Kan will perform and conduct workshop, as part of the British Council’s ‘Folk Nations’ programme, in the City. The workshop will be held on October 29, 6.30 pm at British Library and the band will perform on October 30, 9 pm at Windmill Craftworks, Whitefield. Entry is free.

Suswaralaya College of Music is holding its 14th anniversary celebrations from October 25 to 27 at ‘Our School’ Srividya Auditorium’,15, 27th Cross, Banashankari 2nd Stage. For details, call 26545655.

Vocal recital

A vocal recital by Shilpa Shashidhar, accompanied by NN Ganesh Kumar (violin), BS Prashanth (mridangam), SN Narayana Murthy (ghatam) will be held on October 26, 6.30 pm at Ananya Sabhangana, 91/2, 4th Main, Malleswaram.

Paying tribute

Parveen Begum Smruti Music and Educational Trust is presenting a musical tribute to ‘Ustad’ Abdul Khadar Khan, Pandit Basavaraj Bendigeri and Parveen Begum at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. On November 2, 5 pm, a sarangi jugalbandi will be presented by Farooque Latif and Sarwar Hussain. There will also be a vocal recital by Venkatesh Kumar and bansuri by Sameer Rao. Kathak will be presented by Rajendra and Nirupama Rajendra. On November 3, 5 pm, a sarangi solo recital will be rendered by Sarfaraaz Khan. There will also be a vocal recital by ‘Ustad’ Arshad Ali Khan. Makaran Tulankar will present tabla solo and ‘Ustad’ Faiyaz Khan will present vocals.

Mixed genres

The ‘Bacardi Weekender’ with Tapan Raj (‘Midival Punditz’) and Jayant will be held at the City Bar, 2nd Floor, UB City, Vittal Mallya Road on October 25, 8.30 pm.

‘Mandra’

The Kala Premi Foundation is presenting Kala Gangotri’s musical play Mandra based on SL Byrappa’s novel, directed by BV Rajaram and scripted by Kurgi Shankara Narayana Upadhya, on October 26, 6 pm at the Seva Sadan, 14th Cross, Malleswaram.

Classical strains

‘Vidushi Ramamani TN Rao Memorial Classical Music Concert’ will be held on October 26, 6.30 pm at Shree Sharada Samskrutika Sangha, No. 140, 1st ‘H’ Cross, Sharada Colony, Basaveshwaranagar. Artistes K Vrinda Acharya (vocals), Aditi Krishna Prakash (violin), Sunil Subramanya (mridangam) and GS
Nagaraj (khanjari), will be performing at the concert.

Morning ragas

As part of Swara Suprabhat, on October 27, 7.30 am, Sangeeta Katti Kulkarni will present a vocal recital at Khincha Auditorium, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Race Course Road.

DRAMA

Double treat

Sanchari Theatre is performing ‘Vanity Bag’ on October 30, 7.30 pm and ‘Pinochio’, a children’s play, on October 31, 7.30 pm at Ranga Shankara.

On stage

WeMove Theatre is presenting a play called ‘Feb 29th’ on October 27, 7.30 pm at Alliance Francaise. The play is written by Abhishek Iyengar. It’s part of a new theatre internship programme called ‘Big Step’. Directed by WeMove’s Anirudh Mahesh and Ranjan S, the play has music tracks of Mohammad Rafi and Kishore Kumar. The play has been directed after a seven-week training programme.

DANCE

‘Nrithya Sambrama’

As part of Nrithya Sambrama, a sampradaya series of performances will be presented by Sanjay Shantharam and members of Shivapriya School of Dance on October 27, 6 pm at Seva Sadan, Malleswaram.

The programme is based on Kannada compositions from the CDs brought out by Ananya.
The other artistes participating are Anjali Srikanth, Arushi Nagaraj, Sushanva, Ananya, Meghana, Kruti Mohan, Shweta Iyengar, Stella Rosemary, Samyuktha, Aniruddh, Aishwarya, Shivani, Namitha, Nikhila, Neetu and Sajini.

Celebrations

International Dance Alliance is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. This year’s annual dance festival will take place over two days — October 26 and 27 — at ADA Ranga Mandira, JC Road.

Myriad steps

The Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) will be presenting a kuchipudi dance recital by Avijit Das, under the ‘Every Friday Cultural Evening Programme’ on October 25, 6.30 pm at Yavanika, State Youth Centre, Nrupathunga Road.

‘Believe’


Tarantismo Creative Dance Company is presenting ‘Believe’, a one-of-a-kind dance drama, on November 10, 3 pm and 7 pm at The Good Shepherd Auditorium, Residency Road. It’s going to be a heady mix of dance and theatre, showcasing styles such as jazz, belly dancing, contemporary, Bollywood and hip-hop, interlaced with a theme that will bind these sequences together.
