DRAMA

Punchline

‘Punchline’, a stand-up comedy contest, will begin on January 4 at the Alliance Francaise auditorium. Conceived by comedian Ajit Saldanha and entrepreneur Arun Nair, ‘Punchline’ is open to all those in the age group of 18 to 80.
Preliminary rounds will start at 5.30 pm on January 4 and will feature a maximum of 25 acts. Contestants will get five minutes at an open mic session. The preliminary round will be judged by both the audience as well as a panel consisting of Ajit Saldanha, Sundeep (Soapy) Rao and Praveen Kumar. Eight contestants will go to the finals which start at 8 pm. The winner and runner-up will get to host a show in February 2013 featuring top Aussie comedian Ro Campbell and Mumbai’s hottest act, Keshav Naidu. ‘California Suite’

‘California Suite’, a play, will be staged at Alliance Francaise on January 6, 3.30 pm and 7.30 pm. It is being done by Playtonic Productions and Indianstage Performing Arts.

‘P S I Don’t Love You’ by WeMove Theatre will be staged at Alliance Francaise on January 13, 7.30 pm.

Oil on canvas

‘Candid Perceptions’, a solo exhibition of paintings (oil and acrylic on canvas), by K Karunakaran will be on display at Chitrakala Parishat from January 6 to 8, 11 am to 6.30 pm.

A solo show by Sachin Jaltare, titled ‘Tales Of Infinity’, will be on display at Kynkyny Art till January 11.

‘Four Seasons...’


A collection of oil paintings, entitled ‘Four Seasons in a Haveli’, by Meena Das Narayan will be on display at Movenpick Hotel and Spa at 115, Gokula Extension, near BEL Circle, Jalahalli on January 5 and 6. This event will start with a kathak dance by renowned duo Hari and Chethana on January 5 at 3 pm.

Lecture

German course

The Goethe-Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan is offering a combined weekday evening and weekend German language courses from January 6 at their centre on Cunningham Road. These courses are designed according to the ‘Common European Framework of Reference for Languages’. Exhibition

Abhimaan Craft Society is holding its arts and crafts exhibition Kala Sammelana till January 6 at Safina Plaza, Infantry Road. This exhibition, which promotes craft-based goods and aims to help artisans, has around 50 stalls from 22 states, with unique arts and crafts from remote villages.

MUSIC

Classical touch

Nidhi Ravishankar, a disciple of vidushi Shobha Kukke, will present a Carnatic classical music concert at the Indian Institute of World Culture, Shri B P Wadia Road, Basavangudi on January 5, 6 pm.

‘Olave Jeevana...

The Kala Premi Foundation will present Olave Jeevana Sakshatkara, a programme of classical music based on poems featuring different facets of love, by Vidushi Manasi Prasad on January 6, 6 pm at the Seva Sadan Auditorium, 14th Cross, Malleswaram.

Veena recital

Suswaralaya College of Music, along with Banashankari Fine Arts Society, will present a veena concert by Manjula Surendra, accompanied by S Ashok (mridangam) and N S Krishnaprasad (ghatam) on January 23, 6 pm at SNEA Bhavan, 13th Main, 20th Cross, near Balamuri Ganapathi Temple and Allahabad Bank, Sahakarnagar.

Carnatic tunes

Sudarshan Ajai Thirumalai from Boston will present a Carnatic vocal performance, as part of the
Nirantharam festival, on January 8, 6 pm at Seva Sadan, Malleswaram.

Golden era

Gaata Rahe Mera Dil, a musical event, will held on January 5, 6.30 pm at Chowdiah Hall. The theme is ‘Romance in the Golden Era’. This show will take the audience back to songs of the 50s, 60s and 70s sung by Mohammed Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle. The show will have songs rendered from movies such as Mere Sanam, Aradhana, ‘Guide’, Kati Patang, ‘Love in Tokyo’ etc.

The singers are Anil Bajpai, Sangeetha Melakar and Vinod Sheshadri from Mumbai, Nagachandrika Bhat from Bangalore and Nayan Shah from Calicut.

They will be accompanied by the ‘Evergreen Orchestra’. Donor passes are available at Landmark, Calypso, Canara Union or at DMS Office, Mavaly (26578926).

Vocal duet

Kalasourabha Foundation is organising a Carnatic classical vocal duet by ‘Chintalapalli Brothers’ Somashekhar and Rajashekhar on January 6, 10.30 am at Bhoomika, MEWS Hostel Building, 17th Cross, Malleswaram. They are accompanied on the violin by R Karthik, mridangam by T S Chandrashekhar and khanjari by G S Nagaraj.

‘Pravachanam’
Subrahmanya Vaibhavam – a Pravachanam in Telugu by Shanmukha Sarma, director, Rushipeetham Charitable Trust will be held till January 8 at the Bangalore Gayana Samaja, K R Road.

Festival time

Sri Rama Lalitha Kala Mandira of Banashankari II Stage will hold its ‘25th year music festival programmes’ till January 9 at its concert hall at 5.45 pm.

Reputed artistes like Saralaya Sisters, Lakshmi Rangarajan and Subhiksha Rangarajan, Kadhu Kashyap and A K Jagadeesh, Akkarai Sisters, Kanchana Sisters, N R Harini and N R Sharada; and Sathur Sisters will perform. Entry is free.

DANCE

The Government of Karnataka, Karnataka Sangeeta Nrithya Academy and Karnataka Nrithyakala Parishat are organising the birth centenary celebrations of bharatanatyam guru U S Krishna Rao in the City. Maha-Maya will be inaugurated on January 4, 6 pm at Ravindra Kalakshetra. This will be followed by bharatanatyam recitals by Sonal Mansingh (6.45 pm) and Harish Raman (7.15 pm) of Sri Raja Rajeshwari Nritya Kala Mandir Trust, Tumkur. Prateeksha Kashi will present a kuchipudi recital (7.45 pm) and kathak by Nadam Ensemble, led by Nandini K Mehta and K Murali Mohan (8.15 pm). 
  
The events on January 5 at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan will begin at 10.30 am with a seminar. Among other programmes, a documentary film ‘Smt and Prof U S Krishna Rao’ by H N Suresh will be screened. The cultural events will begin at 6 pm with bharatanatyam by the students of Department of Performing Arts, Bangalore University. Prabal Gupta’s kathakali recital (6.30 pm), bharatanatyam by Hema Panchamukhi and group and Sukruthi Natyalalaya (7.30 pm). The last event of the day will be a kathak recital by Nirupama and Rajendra, Abhinava Dance Company (8 pm).

On January 6, 10.30 am, at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, there will be the screening of the last documentation done on U S Krishna Rao. The cultural programmes will begin at Ravindra Kalakshetra with a bharatanatyam recital by the disciples of Radha Sridhar (6 pm), Venkatesha Natya Mandir. Bharatanatyam recitals will also be showcased by Prathibha Prahalad (6.30 pm), Asha Gopal and Revathi Satyu (7.30 pm). Sharmila Mukherjee and team, Sanjali Centre for Odissi Dance, will present odissi at 8 pm.

Powerful women

Nrityanjali School of Bharatanatyam is organising a two-day classical dance festival at ADA Rangamandira on January 5 and 6, 6 pm onwards.

On January 5, a unique thematic presentation Prema Prana Prahara – a joint collaboration of bharatanatyam, kathak and mohiniyattam, presenting three powerful women, will be showcased.

Poornima Ashok, in bharatanatyam style, will portray Sita-Prema in the Sita Kalyanam episode. 

Smitha in kathak style, will portray Radha-Prana or Radha’s unconditional love for Krishna; and Gopika Verma, through mohiniyattam, will portray Draupadi Prahara.

On January 6, Charles Ma will perform a solo bharatanatyam recital. There will also be a thematic group presentation Shakthi by disciples of L Narendra
Kumar from Chennai.

Mohiniyattam

The Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) will be presenting a mohiniyattam dance recital by Mythili Anoop, under the ‘Every Friday Cultural Evening Programme’, on January 4, 6.30 pm at Yavanika, State Youth Centre, Nrupathunga Road.


Young talent

A bharatanatyam presentation by Kavya Kasinathan, a disciple of Mithun Shyam, will be held on January 5 from 1.15 pm as part of the Chiguru programme organised at Nayana Auditorium, J C Road.

Solo steps

A bharatanatyam solo dance recital by Ananya Santhosh, a disciple of Mithun Shyam, will be held on January 5, 5.15 pm at Nayana Auditorium, KannadaBhavan, J C Road as part of Chiguru programme.
