Ek Safar...’

‘Ek Safar (Germany): An East West Jazz Journey to Remember’ will be presented on March 1, 7.30 pm at Alliance Francaise. It is a Bangalore School of Music presentation. The tabla, piano and clarinet come together to weave rich sounds. All three musicians have a wide-range of experience that goes far beyond the restricted borders of style. For details, call 23536090.
Violin strains
T T Srinivasan will present a violin solo recital at the conference hall, MES College, Malleswaram on March 3, 5.30 pm. He will be accompanied by MT Rajakesari (mridangam), CP Vysa Vittala (kanjira), Dayananda Mohithe (ghatam) and M Gururaj (morsing). Srinivasan will be also be felicitated on the occasion. The programme is organised by MES Alumni Association.
Rock on
‘Spindle Galaxy’, a gig, will be held on March 3 at 5 pm at Ion Bar and Kitchen, Brigade Road. This gig is also one-of-a kind since it is also a visual extravaganza, where the audience can witness not only the bands perform but also vivid visuals on a massive projector screen.

Light notes
The Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) will be presenting a light music (vocal) by Niranjan G Heremath, under the ‘Every Friday Cultural Evening Programme’ on March 1, 6.30 pm at Yavanika, State Youth Centre, Nrupathunga Road.

Vocal delight

‘Qawwali’ time
The India Foundation for the Arts is presenting ‘An evening of qawwali with the Warsi Brothers’ at Chowdaiah Hall on March 8, 7.30 pm. Dance

 Nritya Jahnavi’

A classical dance festival called Nritya Jahnavi will be held on March 10, 6 pm at Sri Munivenkataih Bayalu Ranga Mandira, Ideal Homes, Rajarajeshwarinagar. The inauguration of the festival is by Guru Vasanthalakshmi.

The artistes who will be participating are from the Academy of Bharatanatyam, Rajarajeshwarinagar; Vishrutha School of Performing Arts and Tandava, the vibrance.

 ‘Gudiya...’

Gudiya Sambhrama, the temple festival organised by ‘Heritage’, will be held every weekend till March 3 at the ancient temples in the City.

The theme this year is ‘Sacred Animals’ and ‘Divine Vahanas’. Nadamrutha group (Carnatic vocal), H G Chaitra (Hindustani vocal) and Punya group (bharatanatyam) will present recitals on March 1 at Karanji Anjaneya Devasthanam, Basavanagudi. Anupama Hoskere’s puppetry show will be on March 2; Sikkil Gurucharan’s Carnatic vocal recital and Rukmini Vijayakumar’s bharatanatyam will be held on March 3. ‘Rangapravesha’
Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, as part of Kalabharathi, is presenting the bharata­natyam rangapravesha of Chaitra on March 2, 6 pm at Ravindra Kalakshetra, JC Road.

‘Yudh: Three Perspectives, One Truth’, a solo bharata­natyam dance theatre performance, will be presented by Savitha Sastry on March 9, 7 pm at Chowdaiah Hall. The story and stage play is by A K Srikanth. The music is scored by Chennai-based composer Rajkumar Bharathi. Entry is free.

Young actors

TEA Arts is presenting ‘Bangalore Theatre League’ on March 3, 3 pm at Alliance Francaise. The event will see performances by  theatre troupes from BMS College of Engineering, Mount Carmel College, Amrita Institute of Technology and the Indian Institute of Management followed by a professional performance by the TEA arts team (MSRIT students).

The event will have three phases: Phase one will see Mount Carmel staging ‘Rumors’ ( Neil Simon) at 3 pm. The production is by MCC’s drama team ‘Tye & Die’. BMS College of Engineering will then stage the play Rakshasa, which is produced by Pravruthhi, the BMSCE theatre team. Phase two will begin at 5 pm with Amrita Institute of Technology’s play ‘Untitled’.

The production is by ASE-B. This will be followed by the Indian Institute of Management’s play ‘Party’, produced by ‘IIMB Dramatics’. Phase 3 will see TEA Arts presenting Gun-Jha at 3.45 pm.

Illustrated talk
The  International Music and Arts Society is presenting an illustrated talk by architectural art historian George Michell on his recently released book ‘Mughal Architecture and Gardens — The lesser known monuments and unexplained enigmas’, with photographs by Amit Pasricha, on March 1, 6 pm at the National Gallery of Modern Art, Palace Road. The talk will be supported by audio visuals.

Film screening
The screening of the documentary film, ‘Where is my Tent’ by Zubin Sethna, will be held on March 2, 3 pm at the mini-auditorium, Bangalore School of Music. The sound track is by Ek Safar. For details, call 41285017.

Women composers
As part of ‘International Women’s Day’, a musical programme called ‘Women Composers of India – Celebrating the Unsung, Songs in Eight Languages’ will be held on March 8, 6 pm at Bangalore International Centre, Teri Complex, 4th Main, 2nd Cross, Domlur II Stage. Concept, script and narration are by Sakuntala Narasimhan. Archana Udupa will sing on the occasion.

Exhibition
‘Nice Package’, in collaboration with Time and Space Gallery, is presenting ‘Home’, an exhibition of vintage furniture, old rugs and handmade linen. The exhibition will be on from March 3 to 10, from 11 am to 7 pm at Time and Space Gallery, Lavelle Road.

‘Chaitra’ collection
Chaitra (‘A riot of colours’), an exhibition of saris and fabrics, will be held on March 1 and 2 at Vermilion House, 3/12 Cleveland Road Cross, Fraser Town. The collection will have ‘Kota Masuria’ by Mohammed Israr from the family of weavers for the Royalties of Kota.

There will also be a collection by Ruby Sharan, a young designer from Chanderi district and Banares silk from the ghats of Ganges. Kota weaves are woven in cotton with real zari; there is silk kota with real zari, silk lehariya, bandini, kota tissue with real zari etc. The timing is 11 am to 7 pm.

Alliance Francaise-Ashish Khohar's  Dance DIScourse's 2nd event of 2013 focuses on bringing two divergent forms together. The idea is to see commonalities and meeting points. A must see for all who find Indian forms vastly varying.  Ace historian-presenter will again help contextualize and present this episode of Dance DISCourse. Indian classical dance is a poetic expression of life’s variegated moods and speaks through manifold rhythmic patterns, melodic gestures and subtle facial expressions, creating a world of ecstasy and ethereal existence. To share the same experience two renowned professional dancers of Karnataka, Anuradha Vikranth and Shama Krishna, come together to present ‘Nrityamilana’ a jugalbandi of two beautiful classical dance forms, Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi.

In ‘Nrityamilana’ one can see, Bharatanatyam style  known for its technique and tradition; clarity and composition and the technique of Kuchipudi which makes use of fast rhythmic foot work and sculpturesque body movements. The Charis and Karanas have also been adopted to bring out the similarities between both the styles.

‘Skin of ...’

‘Skin of the Earth’, an exhibition of recent works by Babu Eshwar Prasad, will be on display at Gallery Sumukha, Wilson Garden till March 13.

Working across media with painting, digital prints and videos, the exhibition engages with the idea of soil.

‘Somewhat Like...’

As part of the ‘Curtain Raisers’ event at Jagriti, Whitefield, Just Theatre will stage ‘Somewhat Like a Balloon’, a devised performance, on February 22, 23 (8 pm) and February 24 (3 pm and 6.30 pm). ‘Somewhat Like a Balloon’ is written and directed by Vinod Ravindran. 

It is devised and performed by Anshul Pathak, Anjali Nair, Rency Philip and Swetanshu Bora.

‘Gudiya Sambhrama’
Gudiya Sambhrama, the temple festival organised by ‘Heritage’, will be held every weekend till March 3 at the ancient temples in the City. The theme this year is ‘Sacred Animals’ and ‘Divine Vahanas’. Nadamrutha group (Carnatic vocal), Madhulita Mohapatra and Anjali Raj Urs (odissi dance duet) will perform on February 23 while Vasudha Balakrishna (Carnatic vocal) and Surya Rao (kuchipudi) will perform on February 24. ‘Platform One’
‘Platform One’, an initiative from The Lewis Foundation of Classical Ballet, is showcasing five choreographic works on February 22, 5.30 pm at the National Gallery of Modern Art, Palace Road. The choreographers are Abhilash Ningappa, Anirvan Singh, Rukmini Vijaykumar, Renukumar Siddanand, Safia Suboohi, Tamsin Magnay and Veena Basavarajaiah.

Kathak lessons

Nrityanidhi Dance Institute is presenting a Prayaas, a presentation by budding kathak dancers, on February 22 at Anandashram on Bannerghatta Road.
This will be followed by Natysadhana, a workshop on February 23 and 24 by Harshvardhan Singh, a disciple of Birju Maharaj.

‘Essence of life’

‘Essence of Life’, a multimedia production, will be held on February 22, 6 pm at Chowdaiah Hall.

The production is inspired by Jiddu Krishnamurti’s teachings. Artistes from established dance traditions, namely kathak, bharatanatyam, kuchipudi, mohiniyattam and odissi, will come together to bring to life contemporary thought in an engaging manner.
 Musician B Sivaramakrishna Rao and rhythm conceiver D A Srinivas have rendered the music. Singers Sanjeev Abhyankar and Hariharan have lent their voice to these compositions.

The dancers are Pali Chandra (kathak), Smitha Madhav (bharatanatyam), Rashmi Menon (mohiniyattam), Prateeksha Kashi (kuchipudi) and Japan’s foremost odissi exponent Masako Ono.

‘Guru Shishya...’

Bharatiya Saamagaana Sabha is holding its 4th annual music festival Guru Shishya Parampara till February 17 at Chowdaiah Memorial Hall.

On February 14, Prasanna Gudi will present a Hindustani vocal recital at 5 pm and Sreeranjini Santanagopalan will present a vocal recital at 6 pm. Carnatic vocalist T N S Krishnan will perform at 7.30 pm.

February 15 will have Maharajapuram Ganesh Viswanathan Srinivasan performing at 5 pm, Carnatic vocalist Vidwan Ramakrishnan Murthy rendering a concert at 6 pm and Carnatic vocalist Nisha Rajagopal performing at 7.30 pm.

Carnatic violinist Master Vittal Rangan will perform on February 16, 5 pm; Tanmayee Krishnamurthy at 6 pm and Sakethraman at 7.30 pm.

February 17 will see ‘Saint Thyagaraja Panchar­athna Krithis Veena Ensemble’, led by Balakrishna Dore­swamy Iyengar, performing at 10 am. Vocals by the Kasaravalli sisters will start at 11.30 am. Pandit Jasraj will be presented with ‘Saamagaana Mathanga National Award at 5 pm. Omkar Havaldar will present a Hindustani classical recital at 6 pm and Carnatic vocalist Abhishek Raghuram will perform at 7. 30 pm.

Competition


The Asawari Music Foundation, in collaboration with Majolly Music Trust, will present ‘The Outperformers’, a vocal competition (Western classical, music theatre, pop vocals) for youth from 12 to 16 years of age who are residents of India. Interested participants must have completed a vocal exam from ABRSM/­TRINITY/LCM in 2011/2012 and will need to outperform this examination level. There will be a cash prize of Rs 10,000, trophy and a certificate awarded to the winner.
A scholarship is also offered to a student for the duration of April 2013 to March 2014. An interview and audition is essential to be considered for the scholarship. The closing date is February 28. For

Paying tribute 

A unique concert is being organised by MoonArra called ‘Tribute to Legends’ on February 23 at St John’s Ampitheatre, Koramangala. Loy Mendonsa will feature in the  concert.

Tributes will be paid to Pandit Ravi Shankar, Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, Ustad Sultan Khan, Jagjit Singh, Mehdi Hassan, Gangubai Hangal, Dave Brubeck, Richard Wright (‘Pink Floyd’), Jon Lord (‘Deep Purple’), Barry Gibb, Whitney Houston, Rajesh Khanna and Devanand among others.

Piano recital

A piano recital by Swiss artiste Christina Harnisch will be held on February 15, 7.30 pm at Alliance Francaise.

Language course

There will be music, dance, puppetry, storytelling, traditional games with 150 performing artists.
Srishti Sambhrama will be an exposition of flora and fauna, with a photography exhibition of over 350 exhibits, a photo contest for college students besides screening of documentaries, inter-active sessions with conservationists and a seminar.

‘Rangapravesha’


The bharata­natyam rangapravesha of A V Deepashree, a disciple of G S Rajalaxmi, will be held on February 15, 6 pm at ADA Rangamandira, J C Road.

Odissi repertoire

An odissi repertoire will be performed by Devjani Sen and the senior students of ODC at Yavanika on February 15, 6.30 pm in collaboration with the Indian Council For Cultural Relations. The programme will begin with a mangalacharan, an invocatory piece, followed by pallavis and abhinayas from Jayadeva’s Geet Govindam. As it is Vasant Panchami on February 15, one of the abhinayas performed will be on raga vasant. The concluding piece will be moksha or salvation.

‘Curtain Raisers’

As part of the ‘Curtain Raisers’ event at Jagriti, Theatre Nisha (Chennai) will present ‘84, Charing Cross Road’ by Helene Hanff from February 15 to 17 and Just Theatre will stage ‘Somewhat Like a Balloon’, a devised performance, from February 22, 23 (8 pm) to February 24 (3 pm and 6.30 pm). ‘Somewhat Like a Balloon’ is written and directed by Vinod Ravindran.

It is devised and performed by Anshul Pathak, Anjali Nair, Rency Philip and Swetanshu Bora.
The other plays are Workshop Productions’ ‘Yashodhare Awakens’ (March 1 to 3).
