Bal Bhavan Bannada Chittegalu

Starting this Saturday (January 31), award-winning children movies handpicked from different countries will be screened at the Bal Bhavan auditorium at Cubbon Park in the City. Titled ‘Bannada Chittegalu’ (Colourful Butterflies), the festival aims at encouraging people, especially, tiny tots, to learn about the cultures of different countries. The films will be screened every Saturday and Sunday at 3 pm.

Some of the movies that would be shown during the weekend festival includes Taina (Brazil), Cindrella Moon (China), Alegalu (India), Children of Heaven (Iran), Blue Tiger (Czech Republic), In the name of Sherlock Homes (Hungary), Inuk (Greenland), Clara and the secret of the Bears (Australia), Kafal (India) among others. The first movie that would be screened on January 31 is ‘Goopi Gawaiya Bagha Bajaiya,’ directed by Shilpa Ranade.

The duration of the movies run between 11 minutes and 99 minutes. There would be English subtitles provided for the international movies for the benefit of the audience.

Pacotille - A Play

A bundle on his shoulder, a suitcase in his hand, this is how the vagabond presents himself in all his simplicity. He is living his everyday life, as usual. But one morning this simple life changes when he stumbles upon a little strange box which proves to offer to him everything that he desires. After the first opening of the box nothing is usual anymore. A new world is opening up and the vagabond finds himself thrown into the middle of characters made out of old newspaper. They are five and they bond with the little man, out of friendship, interest, amusement or in other ways. Pacotille is a visual, musical and poetic play where meetings, chases, misunderstandings, sleights of hand succeed each other in an unbridled rhythm.

Pacotille is a play with handheld human size puppets made from old newspaper. Their characters are developing while meeting the actors on stage.  The idea of the play was to use simple materials (old newspaper and second hand clothes) and to create something that isn’t fixed, which allows everyone to have their own image and to lose themselves in their own dreams.

Organic Gardening Workshop at Bhoomi College

For whom: People who wish to take charge of their ‘wellness’ and ‘health.’
 For generations in India, having a kitchen-garden was integral to a complete home, where freshness and nutrition from a variety of vegetables were given significance and the words ‘pesticides’ and ‘chemical fertilizer’ were unheard of. There was no concept of wastage because everything was re-used in some form or the other. Natural resources were respected and utilized responsibly so as to preserve them for future generations – that was the prevalent culture! This forgotten and neglected way of life in urban spaces  needs to be revived.
Why do urbanites have to grow organic food for consumption?
Due to migration of people to urban areas, fertile agricultural land has been converted into houses and other infrastructures thus reducing the land for cultivation. But there is a movement around the world today to transform this barren city-scape into a green and valuable contributor to health and ecological balance. Estimates show that as many as 20 million people are engaged in urban agriculture all over the world. Half of Latin American cities, 72% of urban - house holds in Russia and 14 largest cities in China produce 85% of the vegetables not only from terraces but also on empty sites, unbuilt areas, parks, etc.
 In this age of pesticide-driven agriculture most of the vegetables and fruits available in the market seem to add to human diseases and ill-health. But they are packaged well and look good on the shelf. How can we then be sure if we and our children are eating pure and fresh foods? The best way  to grow our own organic vegetables and greens.
What do we believe in - chemical fertilizers and pesticides, decorative plants and imported grass which yield neither flower nor fruit - or do we believe in safe, flavourful, native, nutritious produce for our kitchens? It is for us to choose and learn a meaningful way of spending some of our leisure time.
 What you can expect from the workshop?
This workshop will help us understand the basic principles of gardening and then apply it to our own context – homes, apartments or terraces. This workshop will focus on the practical aspects, so that we get a first hand experience with earth, soil, compost, nutrients on the field. It will include pest and disease management also.
Rajesh Thakkar committed to organic gardening and farming will be the faculty for this workshop.

 Gardening is a healthy hobby, not only to keep one engaged for a couple of hours in a week but it gives the pleasure of being in the midst of a growing garden. Let’s jointly experience this workshop and start making our own little gardens.

Orion Wine Festival 2015

The much awaited Orion Wine Festival 2015 in association with the Karnataka Wine Board with over 30 National & Indians brands is being held from 23rd to 25th January 2015 at the Lakeside, Brigade Gateway.
 
The Orion Wine Festival is a 3 day state-of-the art event that showcases different wines from the region, Cheese Tasting, Grape stomping, sale & Promotions of over 30 brands, Wine & Cheese master classes, Scintillating Music & Dance Performances, boulevard of food stalls offering tantalizing regional fare. There will be a vintage car display for automobile lovers to delight in.

The guests get to indulge in plenty of fun activities such as cookery sessions, food pairing and Craft lessons. Additionally they get to take home a caricature of themselves against the setting of a winery and a chance to meet Celebrity Chefs and region’s best experts and vintners. Orion Wine Festival is an event that is centered on Wine, Food & Fun.

The tickets are priced at Rs. 250 per person and Rs. 450 for a couple.

Actor, screenwriter and comedian Naveen Richard has been active in the theatre circuit for the last 3 years. He was a finalist in the first edition of Comedy Central’s ‘Indian Comedy Festival’ in 2012. Although having performed over a 100 shows all over Chennai, Bangalore, Cochin, Delhi and Singapore, when his more conservative relatives, who ambush him at family functions, ask him what he does for a living, he impresses them by flashing his law degree (which he carries around at all times for just such an occasion).
In this show , Na’veen‘ will share his take on Malayalam movies ( without the accent ), his true friends , his acting career and mainly about women in his life and beyond!

Pra’veen‘ Kumar , has been nominated for Forbes Top 100 celebrities in India in 2014 alongside Shahrukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Salman Khan. He has also been rated as one of the top 10 stand up comedians in India by Times of India in 2011 and as one of top 10 comics in India to look out for in 2014 by IBN live. He started getting on stage during his college days in BITS, Pilani where he was part of the MIME club. After he passed out from BITS, he wanted to do something related to comedy and so he got married. He started off his stand up comedy career in 2009 and has performed in over 750 shows in 17 cities in India and beyond. He has performed with the famous Vir Das, Papa CJ, Cyrus Broacha etc.
