The nine-day 15th All India Urdu Book Fair, organised by the National Council for Promotion of Urdu Language (NCPUL) in association with the Karnataka Urdu Academy, opened at Chota Maidan, Shivajinagar on Saturday Sep 14, 2013.
The famed event, earlier held in Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Lucknow, Srinagar, etc., is being held in the IT Capital of India for the first time.
Minister for Wakf, Haj and Minority Welfare, Qamar-ul-Islam, will formally inaugurate the book fair at 11.30 am on September 15. R. Roshan Baig, MLA, Shivajinagar, and Mohamed Ubaidulla Sharief, President, Dargah Committee, Ajmer, will be the guests of honour.
The book fair promises to be a treat for connoisseurs of Urdu literature and culture as nearly 75 publishers from across the country, including state Urdu academies, will take part in it and offer their publications for sale on discount.
In a first for the fair, the Bangalore edition features works of calligraphy. The Hyderabad-based Urdu daily, Siasat, has put up four stalls, displaying canvas paintings, works of modern art and calligraphy on wooden items.
Among the participants is the National Institute of Open Schooling, Noida. It will exhibit information on welfare measures for the minorities.
The event will also feature the following cultural programmes:

- Qawwali by Chhote Azeez Nazan Qawwal and troupe: Sept. 17
- Mushaira (gathering of poets) by Mehfil-e-Nisa, B’lore: Sept. 18
- Drama on ‘The poetry of Deccani poet Sulaiman Khateeb’, by Zafer Mohiyuddin: Sept. 19
- Seminar on Urdu satiric literature and Mushaira by Idara Anjuman Khush Dalan-e-Bangalore: Sept. 20
- Ghazal recital by Akbar Yusufi and troupe, Bangalore: Sept. 21
